Interview by @pkrugman.bsky.social of @kimlanelaw.bsky.social about Hungary is superb; well worth 30min (on 2x). Thanks to @hertieschool.bsky.social I had the privilege to hear and & meet her in Berlin not too long ago, but this is just INCREDIBLE analysis about #democracy and how it has been gamed.
I would like some thoughts on ⬇️ from people who work on these issues or have followed longer than I have. If you have time, of course. Merci! A new research project at Bielefeld University, funded by the @volkswagenstiftung.de, has officially launched.
Led by Professor @lisaregazzoni.bsky.social, the project develops a Material-Oriented Theory of History (MOTH), exploring how matter and materiality can reshape approaches to the past.

Happy Tax Day, New York. We’re taxing the rich.
A line of Nazis at the Nuremburg rally, throwing Nazi salutes. Their backs are to us. Facing them is a hand-tinted group of child laborers from the early 20th century, squinting suspiciously at them.
I'm worried about AI psychosis. Specifically, I'm worried about the psychosis that makes our "capital allocators" spend *$1.4T* on the money-losingest technology in the history of the human race.

A discussion of the current situation based on Edward Said's work on Palestine (hence the title).
If you're in or around Bielefeld tomorrow 16th April, it takes place in the Bielefeld Stadtbibliothek.

'Ah but you're cherry-picking excellent writers. Surely the average person benefits? I myself found it useful this one time'
No. None of us benefit from dragging down the level of writing to some lowest common denominator. Have some self-respect. Be ambitious. ideophone.org/find-your-ow...

Joep Schuurkes On the acceptance of GenAI Joep Schuurkes — 5 April 2026 By using GenAl: • I accept the models were trained on stolen data. • I accept that the data was labeled by exploited workers. • I accept the environmental costs of the data centers running these models. • I accept that I am outsourcing some of my skills to a company. • I accept these companies don't have a viable business model. • I accept that I am granting more power to big tech and their vision for the world. • I accept that I am granting more power to the United States. • I accept that all this effort could have spent elsewhere

Though OpenAI’s new policy doc is being taken seriously by some in the media, it's ultimately a "policymercial": a document that tells us far more about how the company wants people to think about OpenAI than what it wants us to do about OpenAI. My latest for @techpolicypress.bsky.social --

Why do Anthropic engineers talk to Claude as a witch-doctor to his potions? How is prompt engineering like spider divination? Can one reason without reasons?

Does anyone happen to have access to the IBM 59 card verifier reference manual and could provide a scan (it's 38 pages)? Archives only seem to have the physical exhibit. It needs to be the manual for that particular model, not the 56, not the 129. (Boosts welcome)

Cover of book 'Race, Culture, and Politics in German Historical Thought, 1785–1815' by Morgan Golf-French
My book is Online! 🥳🥳🥳
Race, Culture, and Politics in German Historical Thought, 1785–1815 represents the culmination of ten years' work.
In it, I try to peel back our assumptions about how historiography worked in the German Enlightenment, situating it between the...

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
Just read an essay that ended with (paraphrased so you can't search for it) "I can trust my colleagues here at Cambridge University to use LLMs correctly. But can I trust people at lesser universities?" and oh fuck off lmao
Picture of Paris, from a deserted quarry in the foreground to factories beyond
Van Gogh made this large-scale watercolor of the rapidly industrializing outskirts of Paris from the base of the hill of Montmartre where he lived with his brother Theo. It shows the rapid changes the city was undergoing, from the deserted quarry in the foreground to the numerous factories beyond it

Working on a train, so I'm curious: do y'all listen to music while writing, and if so, what pieces/genres? I'm mostly a symphonic music listener while working, I feel like it helps me structure sentences and layer ideas. But there's music I love to work to that I don't actually listen to otherwise.
No, but seriously. This year I am including a paragraph in all my syllabi on having to be offline during my seminars. I will explain to them why and stuff, but we need to do sth. to get them back to old-fashioned reading.
