Yesterday’s last Full Council meeting ended with the Council leader losing a confidence vote, in a pre-election blow for Labour.
We are prepared to replace the failing leadership after 📆 7th May elections and to make #Birmingham 🔶cleaner & 🔶safer, with 🔶 Council that finally works!

Labour vote down motion on police front counters and school holiday meals Liberal Democrat members of the London Assembly proposed the two ideas at City Hall

We could have saved our police front counters but Labour and Greens voted against the Lib Dem proposal to fund keeping them open. Labour also voted against investing more to tackle holiday hunger. Such a disappointment - we can’t trust Labour in London www.mylondon.news/news/zone-1-...

The United Kingdom is at its best when we’re true to our values: tolerance, decency, respect for individual freedom and the rule of law.

We can't let Nigel Farage throw that all away by turning Britain into Trump’s America.

Choose a brighter future with the Liberal Democrats.

Ed Davey quote reading:
I am announcing a new plan to invest in our hospitals, in social care and in supporting family carers – to help get people out of hospital more quickly, and help keep them out of hospital safely – through a combination of reserving places in care homes, funding more care packages for people after they leave hospital, and supporting family carers properly to look after their loved ones at home.

Our plan could see the end of 12-hour A&E waits by the end of this year.

Will the government listen?

My post on Sam Freedman's Substack today: Sexual offences get remarkably little discussion given their seriousness and frequency.

In an average year about 1 in 25 women, and one in 100 men, are sexually assaulted.

But not only is this issue neglected. The trend is discouraging too.

Absolutely colossal night of success for the Lib Dems.

In the 10 byelections, the LDs have gained from the CONs, GRNs, INDs and LAB, with a narrow loss to REF by 31 votes in Babergh.

Scoreboard: LD 7, REF 1, CON 1, IND 1.

I assume the media will cover this as breathlessly as every opinion poll?

Thrilled Dame Sarah Mullally has been named as the new Archbishop of Canterbury designate.

She’s been a constant friend to the interfaith charity I founded holding the first interfaith iftar at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Bringing communities together always. t.co/JzWUtZVWhO

The IPC has confirmed our worst fears. We cannot sit idle while this catastrophe unfolds.

Trump has the power to stop the devastation. He needs to pick up the phone to Netanyahu - today - and threaten consequences unless aid routes into Gaza are fully reopened.

As we've seen across history, the populist playbook used by Farage is ugly, powerful and incredibly destructive.

We know where it will lead if we don't stop it.

I fear we could have a situation where Trump comes to our country, is honoured with a lavish dinner at one of our finest palaces, yet no one reminds him that he has the power to stop the horrifying starvation, deaths and captivities in Gaza.

A message from the London Assembly Liberal Democrats: Today our hearts are with the people of Southport.

We think of the families and friends grieving this most painful of losses. We think of the officers and first responders who attended such unimaginable scenes. We think of everyone in the community whose lives were changed forever that day by the utter senselessness of such brutal atrocity.

Above all, we think of Alice, Bebe, and Elsie – three precious little girls taken before their time. May they rest in eternal peace.

From London to Southport, we send our love, support and solidarity.

Black background with white text. The header reads:
"Joint Statement by London Assembly Members Marina Ahmad (Labour) & Hina Bokhari OBE (Liberal Democrat)"
Main title: "Standing Together Against Islamophobia"
The statement says: STANDING TOGETHER
AGAINST ISLAMOPHOBIA

We may represent different parties, but we share something far more important: an unshakeable belief that London’s greatest strength is its diversity.

We are incredibly proud to represent this wonderful city, which is a home and beacon of hope for people of all faiths and none, of all races and backgrounds, of all sexualities and identities.

We did not enter public life to stay silent in the face of injustice.

As the first Muslim women ever elected to the London Assembly, we are determined to stand together now to speak out against the anti-Muslim hate intensifying in both the city and country we love.

One year ago, in Southport Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar lost their lives in the most horrific way. Eight more children and two adults were seriously injured.
As mothers ourselves, the anguish, pain and grief caused to their loved ones is overwhelming. The tributes paid by family members earlier this week were heartwarming and beautiful.
The attacks unleashed a wave of Islamophobic violence across communities in Britain, including right here in London. Women wearing the hijab were harassed in broad daylight. Mosques were threatened and vandalised. Families lived in fear. We ourselves were advised to stay home for our own safety.
The threat of real, widespread violence against Muslims was laid bare and it has not gone away.
Over the past year, there has been a clear escalation in Islamophobic hatred which has become a normalised and accepted part of the everyday experience of British Muslims.

We have experienced this firsthand – not only as politicians and public figures, but simply as Muslim women living our lives. We have seen how anti-Muslim prejudice intersects with misogyny to try to force women like us out of politics.

We've also seen the abuse directed at Mayor Sadiq Khan double over the last year, fuelled by racist conspiracy theories deployed for political gain.

This is not accidental. It is part of a deliberate attempt to weaponize our faith, divide our communities and weaken our proud democracy.

Today, as our community, our city and our leadership face increasingly toxic attacks, we say: enough.

When our diversity is painted as a weakness, we say it is our strength. When division is sown, we choose solidarity. When hate is spread, we answer with hope.

Islamophobia is more than a problem for the Muslim community; it is a concern for everyone who loves London. This is about the kind of city we want to be, the kind of inclusive democracy we want to protect, and the kind of future for everybody that we want to build.

The message on London’s streets a year ago was clear – no to hatred and othering, yes to unity and togetherness. We call on all Londoners to stand with the Muslim community now as they did last year. Speak up for us. Show up for us. And join us in saying to the world, as one city:

Together, we stand.
Together, we are stronger.
Together, we are London.

The second is from Ed Davey (@EdwardJDavey), responding: "By trying to bully nations out of recognising Palestine, Trump is making himself the biggest hurdle to a two-state solution and a lasting peace. The UK must stand strong with Canada and our allies, we should recognise the Palestinian state right now. No more delays."

We can’t allow Trump to bully countries out of recognising Palestine.

It’s time to recognise the Palestinian state—immediately.

Mass starvation in Gaza and over 1,000 Palestinians killed while seeking aid since May. The government says the situation is intolerable yet they continue to tolerate it.

The UK needs to stop all arms exports to the Israeli Government - today.

Today, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced her funding plans for schools through to 2029.

And thanks to you -- we won back billions for schools.

There's a long way to go. But today, we're celebrating a win for schools.
