Bring back art deco trains. I had to take an Amtrak across country and was devastated to find it a glorified bus. No richly upholstered interiors, no first-class dining cars. I did not solve a single murder. How far we have fallen.

In 2014, at today’s prices, the equivalent of $53,000,000,000 of Bitcoin (600,000) vanished from a bitcoin exchange in Tokyo—Mt.Gox.
It was at the time the largest heist of cryptocurrency in history.
And for me, it was the start of a story that I would follow for almost a decade

Writing in IT Media, Masaki Kubota criticizes recent media reports which portray overseas tourists as a scourge on local areas. He argues foreigners are often being scapegoated for problems endemic to Japanese society. www.itmedia.co.jp/business/art...

Another public history project on our map. Minna de Honkoku (Japan) is a collaborative transcription project that converts historical Japanese cursive scripts into modern readable text.

Tomoka Shibasaki’s A Hundred Years and a Day delights in the anticapitalist aesthetic of gentle decline, and the 34 stories in this collection express a gorgeously articulated nostalgia for people and places left behind in the past. #Japaneselit #Booksky 📚 My review: japaneselit.net/2025/02/15/a...

Some manuscripts are never meant to be read, at least not by human eyes. This 13th-century statue of Prince Shōtoku from Harvard University was filled with manuscripts, including prayers by nuns, that were only discovered 700 years later. #manuscriptmonday

2025 New and Upcoming Japanese Fiction Releases *Updated as of February 5, 2024 This is a list of titles from Japan translated into English for publication in 2025. It does not include most manga, light novels, or picture books. Listed released …

RJL's new/upcoming list is updated through Feb, adding 3 titles, inc Michiko Ishimure's 480pg Spring Castle (trans Bruce Allen)—the epic story of Japan's bloody Shimabara Rebellion.

With a new Musashi AND Semishigure, I still think it may finally be the year samurai* epics make it into English.

Happy everywhere publication day to Osamu Dazai's No One Knows (translated by Ralph McCarthy).

It's a collection of 14 tales. A half-dozen have never before appeared in English. Dazai described them as “soliloquies by female narrators.” The collection includes the novella Schoolgirl.

Tokyo Skytree in early evening, top lit up blue. Orange horizon, then pinkish, then blueish, then darker blue sky preparing for night. A couple of rogue pink clouds. I am still house bound with a sick kid and nothing but the bleak af news feeds to keep me company, but I am still allowed out on the roof sometimes, if I promise to be good.
