The 1961 Phillies hold the modern day record for most losses in a row at 23 straight. When that team won its first game after the streak, Philly fans came out to the airport and threw a celebration for their team. Which I think is just so wonderful.

I guess this is the day to recommend this one of mine - an art theft/murder puzzler set in 1955 New England and thrown into the lap of a young parish priest. Publishers Weekly called it "a superior whodunit" and who am I to disagree.

Baseball season is back, so here's a reminder to listen to the Morning Lineup podcast. We're on video now! On Spotify and MLB's Youtube channel. You can get a glimpse into the bare white walls of my one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment. Check it out

The Louisville Bats are becoming the Louisville Humidity this summer. An homage to, well, their humidity. Sweat stains on the back/under the armpits. It is so dumb and I love it and now you can just tell people it's not sweat I bought the shirt like this

The World Baseball Classic is about to begin and we've been writing a ton of stories at dotcom. I'm going to run through some of my previews here if you're just now getting on board.
@mattmonagan.bsky.social, David Adler and I did a preview for all four pools: www.mlb.com/news/world-b...
The stadium has gone through a bunch of renovations and the dimensions have changed and I can’t get in, but through a hole in the fence, I can guess the ball went something like the below
Made it to the old Sixto Escobar stadium … where Josh Gibson once hit a ball an estimated 618 feet
A preparation pod for the World Baseball Classic. It starts TONIGHT. Let’s go, baby

Wrote up a handy, pool-by-pool guide for the World Baseball Classic with @michaelclair.bsky.social and David Adler. Read it and yell at us why our predictions are wrong.

ICYMI it over the weekend, the great Josh Gibson once, may have, hit a 600-ft homer in Puerto Rico. I dug into that and his spectacular career in P.R.
(Also, I will be in Puerto Rico the next couple weeks. To cover WBC Pool A and to find that HR ball)

Shouts to Adam Hall in this story. The only pro ball player to ever come out of the island of Bermuda will play for Canada
Some of my absolute favorite dudes and stories in this year’s World Baseball Classic:

By the way, I will be in Puerto Rico covering Pool A for the WBC. Super pumped. Also, I will personally try and find the spot where this 618 foot dinger landed
“Everybody kept quiet. No one had seen something like that. They were all shocked.”
The great Josh Gibson really (may have?) hit a 600-foot home run in Puerto Rico. Here’s the wild story

Led by Jose Quintana and coming off impressive play in the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics, Colombia looks to have a great shot at getting to their first WBC quarterfinal in 2026. www.mlb.com/news/colombi...

Executive editor Matt Murray says the Washington Post will be closing the sports department “in its current form.” The paper plans to retain several reporters to join features and cover sports as a “cultural and societal phenomenon,” and will have a few employees on its print sports section. Speaking to Post employees, Murray says today is about “positioning ourselves to become more essential to people's lives, and what is becoming a more crowded, competitive and complicated media landscape, and after some years when, candidly, the Post has had struggles to do that." In addition to sports, the Washington Post is killing its book section, suspending its Post Reports podcast, restructuring its metro section, and shrinking its international footprint.
The richest man in the world is now fully gutting an absolute institution. Fuck this.
I think I forgot that Carlos Santana first started his career as a catcher. His first game, in 2010, he caught Jake Westbrook (who's been retired for 13 years now). Pudge Rodriguez was the opposing catcher
New favorite player alert? Cocaina Garcia
He earned his unusual nickname as a result of batters who "seemed drugged by his pitches and unable to concentrate or focus on the baseball."

Shouts to Adam Hall, who's playing for his dad's home country Canada in the WBC.
Hall grew up in Bermuda, and is the only pro player ever from there. I talked to him about playing ball on the 6-field, island paradise last summer.
"It wasn't too busy."

Where is Congress? America is being sold down the river by its lying, corrupt, cowardly, mentally failing President. Where is Congress? If you ever take your responsibilities seriously, now is the time. Stand up for your constituents, be brave, send a message to the rest of the world. Act now.
"We nonetheless bet on what tends to work. And big butts tend to work when it comes to power."
I did an important investigation into whether big butts make baseball players better. And they do. A lot.
