Also, if the player from the team that didn’t dump the puck takes their sweet-ass time chasing the puck, thus letting it cross the goal line when they could have stopped it, it would get waved off. And, you can ice the puck while you are killing a penalty.

Then it is not icing, and you’re good. HOWEVER, for player safety, the ref makes a call at which player is “more likely” to get to the puck first based on who gets to the area level with the faceoff dot first…so that’s where judgment calls come in and it gets dicey.

The punishment is the face-off comes back into your zone anyway, and you can’t make any player changes, so if you iced the puck because you’re desperate to get to the bench, you’re out of luck. BUT if someone from your team can beat someone from the other team chasing the puck down…

Well then! I am here for you. Icing exists so that when you’re playing defense, you can’t just wildly chuck the puck to the other end and turn the game into a boring game of fetch. If the puck crosses the red line and goes all the way past the goal line w/out being touched, that’s icing.

It’s a lot of games to schedule, so there’s definitely a bit of staggering.

I assume you know the basics of icing, so I’ll just say nobody fully, consistently understands the rules in hockey!
