Not entirely the same concept, but I remember the airship ride in Maplestory. Took 15 actual minutes to transfer between continents, during which you could stay and chat in the cabin where it's safe, or go out on deck and maybe get a balrog attack, which were pretty darn unkillable for lower levels.
