Saba alt concept draft "Fresnel"

The sea was never the same. Silence fell upon the radios once full of chatter. Now, only the feeble glows of incandescent bulbs link seafarers with the safety of land.

"Without FRESNEL, we are stranded in the dark."
- local fisherman

Thank you! I love thinking about this stuff

So why is the mooms in a space suit? Cuz I thought it would look cool.
My idea for this started with the humble question, "What is civilization?"
If Mumei is civilization or is the observer of civilization, does that apply to just humans? If humans find alien civilization, what happens to her? Does she know if they exist, or is her knowledge as good as ours?
I don't have the answer to any of those. I'd love to know what you think. But that train of thought gave me the idea of Mumei in an era where humans have achieved interstellar travel.
I don't think it's a stretch to say that the first thing we will do with the tech is try to find (and visit) extraterrestrial life. And by life, I mean the smart and sentient ones.
But it won't be easy. In fact, it could take decades or centuries, if at all. In the meantime, as we hop around more stars and galaxies, the question "But where is everybody?" would sting more and more. So much so that, we might even do some tampering, in an attempt to engineer away the Fermi's Paradox. Dropping monoliths wherever we find primitive life, hoping one day we get a call back.
Mumei stands ever so observant, wondering where all of this leads to.
