it's so sad to see, because audio text generation has come a long way and that's great for accessibility, but what's not great for accessibility is garbage captions that are unreadable. nothing can ever really replace careful work by people who understand and apply human context.

it was a short stop for me long ago and idk anything more, but the people i knew who used to do these were insanely smart former court reporter ladies with impeccable reference sheets of athlete names from every country. they would be so sad about this.

briefly during covid, i worked for the company who is contracted by NBC to do Olympic captions. used to be done by a curated team of 10 employees with full benefits. since bought by a shady VC company who has aggressively sold the dream of cutting costs through AI and firing everyone all the time.

whenever i get too mad about grammar, i remember Arabic scholar Sฤซbawayhi, who lost a grammatical debate about wasps in 796 AD and got so mad about it that he went home and died

i can tell quickly in a draft if a character is about to get important to a story, because the author starts describing their eyes real sexy

the greatest editorial feeling in the world is when your suggestions cause an author to add the word "chittering" to a line that didn't have "chittering" in it before

why so many posts about how to find a good editor and never posts about how to find a dark and arcane editor, barely contained to the human form?

if you imply that something might happen in your book, why not let it happen? should your characters almost get in a bar fight, or should they get in a bar fight?

eSign and Dropbox both have options where you can create signing fields for clients, both free (eSign free up to 3 a month)

Adobe Sign will let you do it for free but it will hassle you about it and pretend like it won't

try not to take critique to heart from author groups, betas, or early readers that are not your target audience or natural readers of your genre. any opinions can be valuable through the right lens, but you do not want to tailor your book to the tastes of people who do not want it or understand it.
