The #KBS2025 session on Sex and Gender Studies wrapped up with a great presentation by @meganpcook.bsky.social.
She shared results from a systematic review on how men and women are studied differently in alcohol research.

Unlike meat, eggs or dairy, alcohol offers no nutritional benefit - but it consumes vast land, water and energy supplies.
So why are we still treating it like a harmless luxury?

Cutting alcohol use doesn’t just help our health - it helps the planet too 🌍
Fewer emissions, less water waste, more resilient communities.
A win-win, if we act now.

New from @meganpcook.bsky.social. Gender differences in Aus and NZ alcohol research. There are far fewer single gender studies focused on middle-aged men, despite the fact that they consume the most alcohol and experience the most alcohol-related harms. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
"Sorry if that's a bit too strong, that's just my climate rant!"🌳
In our latest podcast, Dr @meganpcook.bsky.social of La Trobe University discusses alcohol’s overlooked environmental impact🎙️

It was a pleasure to work on this review with amypennay.bsky.social, gabrielcaluzzi.bsky.social, sarahcallinan.bsky.social, sarjomac.bsky.social alextorney.bsky.social, Benjamin Riordan & Amanda Cooklin.
We included over 1,200 papers and found that the majority of single-gender studies on alcohol consumption in the last decade focused on women, despite men consuming more alcohol and experiencing more harm.
Thrilled to have our systematic review of the differences in the way women and men have been studied in alcohol research over the past decade up online at IJDP - www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti....
Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in "drink spiking" but we rarely associate the two. So we analysed Reddit posts to explore alcohol's role in drink spiking & sexual violence.

📢Already tomorrow!
@meganpcook.bsky.social from #CAPRAustralia will be presenting a paper on differences in how men and women are studied in alcohol research!
📅21st February 2025 at
🕓4pm via Zoom and in-person at
📍La Trobe city campus
(Room 2.11, Level 2/360 Collins St, Melbourne VIC)
Thanks so much for your interest Gillian. The review isn't published yet, so VSURF attendee's are getting some early insights. I will be presenting a condensed version of this presentation at KBS in June and will send the paper through as soon as its published!!
Really looking forward to sharing findings from our systematic review of over 1,200 studies and to discuss differences in how men and women have been studied in alcohol research over the past decade.
Public health researchers are well-placed to investigate alcohol's impact on sustainability, write Dr @meganpcook.bsky.social & Prof Sarah MacLean.
In our latest blog, they argue that alcohol interventions can reduce health harms while improving planetary health.

We finally have enough CAPR members on BlueSky for a CAPR starter pack! More of us will probably be migrating over soon.

And i will take this opportunity to highlight other work i did with @sarjomac.bsky.social & others where we explore current evidence on alcohol production & it's contributing to significant environmental degradation through water usage & other carbon emission costs. academic.oup.com/heapro/artic...
Fantastic work led by @sarjomac.bsky.social suggesting that increased substance use is likely and how it is crucial to document effects of a changing climate on people who use AoD so that policy and services can meet future needs.
