If you're curious about what's on plate when you order squid, tune in! And trust me, it's probably not what you thought... 🍽️ + 🧬 = ??
Always such a privilege to discuss seafood transparency and traceability with @andrewlewin.bsky.social 🦑 !

Back in mid February, I decided to change the way I podcast into weekly themes where I post 4 solo episodes from Monday-Thursday, 1 Interview episode. It’s fun to focus on a single theme to drive home important ocean science and conservation stories.
Check it out: www.speakupforblue.com/podcast
I’ve ordered calamari for most of my life and not once have I ever wondered or been told what species of squid I was eating. I just knew it was squid. I never questioned it once.
Why does it matter? Well, the global squid fishery is not managed well.
I should have asked a while ago…Damn!
To keep me on track, I'm checking in with @andrewlewin.bsky.social to share some of the fun stories that I've uncovered during the research. Including this neat little anecdote about how the domestication of cats is connected to copper mines in Cyprus that were once ancient hydrothermal vents.
I can’t wait for these stories and to share them on the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.
“The work is now only beginning” Dr. Jane Lubchenco, on the High Seas Treaty
“Multilateralism works, but it takes time” Peter Thomson, United Nations. #worldoceansummit #WOS2026
“If there is one place where we need to work together to protect it, it’s the ocean”, Martinez Scherer, Special Envoy for the ocean COP30 #WOS2026
On Wednesday, the 13th annual World Ocean Summit kicks off in Montreal. 🌊
ORRAA will be there to engage in these critical discussions, with our Executive Director Karen Sack due to participate in discussions on financing Ocean-based solutions. ⚓
Graphic shows a tile for the World Ocean Summit. Its logo is shown in white on the left, superimposed over an underwater photo of a scuba diver in a coral reef on the right side. The tile is centered over a teal background, and white text under the logo reads “Innovate, protect, prosper: securing our ocean future, March 4th-5th 2026, Montreal.”
🇨🇦 We're looking forward to attending the World Ocean Summit in Montréal this week! Our own Bimini Horstmann will be joining ProtectedSeas as a panelist for a "How to" workshop titled "How to accelerate MPA Implementation: from global commitments to on-the-water delivery."

Something to seriously think about
Deep sea mining will not be good for the ocean.
Where is this?
Sure
Renewable energies will definitely help reduce climate change. Deep-sea mining is not a good idea.
The ocean can recover if we focus on the right solutions. This episode dives into how restoring kelp forests can rebuild biodiversity and strengthen ocean resilience in a warming world.
One of the most effective climate solutions for the ocean might be hiding beneath the waves. This episode explores kelp forests, seaforestation, and why restoring underwater forests matters now.
Kelp forests support fisheries, protect coastlines, and help the ocean adapt to climate change, yet they rarely get attention. Learn how seaforestation is restoring life underwater with Ocean Wise.
Kelp forests are disappearing, along with one of the ocean’s most powerful climate and biodiversity allies. Ocean Wise’s Scott Bohachyk explains how seaforestation is helping underwater forests recover.
Did you know some endangered species rebounded because of past CITES protections?
Monk seals and olive ridleys show what is possible when the world steps up.
Now sharks have that same chance.
Apple:
We still know so little about manta and devil ray migration, behaviour, and range.
Yet they were being traded at rates they could never survive.
This episode covers the decision that could finally protect them.
Spotify:
The upgrade to Appendix I is a massive turning point for shark and ray conservation.
In this episode, I explain what it means, why it happened, and why it gives me hope.
Hear the full breakdown:
Apple:
For years, manta rays were hunted for their gill plates and sharks for their fins.
Now, the world finally said: Enough.
Learn how new protections could change everything for these species.

Thank you!
“Across nearly every field where human activity carries risk, one principle appears again and again: If you don’t fully understand the consequences, you proceed with restraint—or not at all.”
Our new blog post digs into how & why deep-sea mining isn’t following that principle. 👇

Always great to have Andrew Thaler on the podcast!
There are many steps before TMC could start drilling. It will be interesting to see what happens. I have done some interviews on this topic with Dr. Andrew Thaler. Check out this episode: youtu.be/j1ayZO-3frc?...
