"Sure you don't want to come in?" She asks absently through an already closing door. Mulled wine has stained her lips and cheeks crimson, candlelight dances in her eyes.
"No, no, I'm fine!" I simper, slipping on the icy doormat in my haste to leave, blushing with cold or embarrassment. Hands empty.
Cassie's laptop squats in the corner, humming. It spews notifications, bile rising with acrid words. Body is ☕, facecard declined🤮

He collects objects like I collect souls. Dust mars our hallowed common ground so the footprints are easy to follow, coming to a halt by a door signed ‘Archives’. Already cool for preservation, he doesn’t notice the chill of my presence until it’s too late. Scythes of light illuminate my acquisition
His gaze was easy to meet but harder to hold.
“I’m sorry, she left,” I explain to the hollow of skin beneath his bobbing Adam’s apple.
“When? Didn’t you tell her I’d come?”
His eyes are harder now.
