Jail expansion drains public funds, harms communities, and doesn’t increase public safety - all while benefitting law enforcement budgets & private contractors who profit off of building new jails.
Jail populations have skyrocketed in recent decades. In response, sheriffs push to build new jails despite persistent issues with existing jails (inhumane conditions! staffing shortages!) and data showing that jail expansion only makes things worse.
