Agreed! I benefit from it but know it’s an egregious giveaway to the people who need it least. And then choosing to cut transit expansion rather than the grant makes it even worse.

Unusable bike rack on BC Ferries Queen of New Westminster.

I genuinely love taking the ferry by bike - there are many advantages like walk-on fare, no sailing waits, and first in line for food, but darn it could be so much better…#bcferries

It’s not every day that a single line from a book of fiction is so eye-opening and helpful in understanding the world: “Corruption is a tax, perhaps the most common tax in the world.” (“Critical Mass” by Daniel Suarez.)

Denmark responded to 1973 oil crisis by reducing car-dependency. Let's do that now. - Streetsblog Chicago "The government had to introduce car-free Sundays. And then people realized that the car-free Sunday was the best day of the week."

“The [Copenhagen] modal split in 1970 was about 10% biking. But then we got the oil crisis…So that was the changing point and now there’s more than a 30% bike modal split.”

We can change our cities. Because of the high price of gas, or just because it’s clearly the smart thing to do. #UrbanTruth

It sure would be nice to have it turn out to a near-term blueprint rather than a long-term fantasy. ‘Heck of a way to have that come about though.

This was the answer a past mayor of Copenhagen gave for prioritizing active transportation. It was the only thing the city could afford. I’d like to think this could be a silver lining to our current provincial budget challenges, but I’ll manage my optimism until evidence emerges.

In an era of unwatchable interviews this was a truly remarkable breath of fresh air.

And it’s been easy for decades. I transferred there every day for during a co-op job in 1993 and remember it very fondly.

I listened to it as an audiobook on a bike ride. I agree - it was very well done and enjoyable.

A good start would be having our own car regulations rather than harmonizing with US rules. Some vehicles just shouldn’t be admissible or insurable in Canada.

Bike on the Militant Mothers of Raymur bridge.

Fascinating history! I rode over this bridge a few months ago but didn’t know anything about it. I hope it re-opens quickly.

"We need regulation of e-bikes!!!" people scream as SUVs and trucks get larger and deadlier and people speed and drive distracted with impunity.

I'm happy to talk about e-bike regulation as long as folks agree that the *most urgent* problem is cars.

Powerpoint slides from a presentation entitled “Unleashing the Silent Majority to Beat Bikelash”, which feature photographs of urban transformation from cities around the world.

The global phenomenon of “bikelash” has become one of the biggest barriers to implementing interventions that make our streets more liveable, accessible and sustainable. So how do we best manage it as advocates for change? Here are eight strategies we recently presented at the Velo-city Conference.🧵

Comment: Save Our Saanich encourages mob behaviour that silences voices Change is coming. Will we face it with courage and compassion — or let the loudest voices decide our future for us?

I'm happy to see that the Times Colonist published this letter. I was at this meeting and the behaviour there was appalling. The level of racism, conspiracy promotion, fear-mongering, and selfishness was disheartening to witness. www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comm...

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Very frustrating to still see public campaigns like this from Delta PD telling kids to wear bright reflectors on their costumes and people to leave their bikes at home.

The risk to pedestrians on Halloween comes from drivers, not cyclists.

I was on a sailing when the announcement included “for the safety of your vehicle…” They seem to have backed off since then. But yes, tickets seem like the solution, but would require unlikely legislation.

Good catch. Not much you can do with an Enviolo hub once they’re out of warranty. They last long enough that by the time you replace it you’ll likely have saved more than the difference, while also having enjoyed the convenience of putting your bike away wet (esp. with the belt drive).
