good, productive feminism explains that gender isn't innate and the patriarchy can be deconstructed; essentially telling young women that all men are creeps and predators and will never change is actually just weirdly reactionary and purposeless

‘I see it as trafficking’: the brutal reality of life as a foreign student in the UK The long read: Universities in Britain rely on overseas applicants paying full fees, which has given rise to some unscrupulous recruiters and left many hopefuls and their families deep in debt

if you work in a UK uni, drop everything and read this (not news to many of us, but sobering to have the dots joined up; the stories are outrageous and heartbreaking)

A photo with Aumua Amata Radewagen, the member of Congress that represents American Samoa as a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives.

American Samoa has opposed U.S. birthright citizenship since 1900, and remains the only U.S. territory without citizenship by statute. Its non-voting delegate, Rep. Radewagen, supports “U.S. national” status. Citizenship could fortify equal protection challenges to A. Samoa’s traditional government.

Friends, again with respect because this is a complex issue: children born to citizens of tribal governments do not have constitutional birthright citizenship under many, if not most forms of constitutional argument and authority (incl. Supreme Court precedent relied upon in this case)./1

This is vile, but also a nonsense argument because OF COURSE if you have ANY condition you are incentivised to get a diagnosis, because that is the way to getting treatment and feeling better.

I am incentivised to get a diagnosis if I have a chest infection because then I can have antibiotics.

Wyoming’s governor signed into law a so-called “fetal heartbeat” ban. Abortion is now banned in the state when “cardiac activity” is detected, around 6 wks of pregnancy.

WY now shifts from “Restrictive” to “Very Restrictive” on our interactive map. Learn more: https://gu.tt/4985P4S

The reviews searched over 12,000 references. They screened 547 full-text papers for inclusion. They included 17. That's a 96.9% exclusion rate at full text. 530 studies were relevant enough to survive initial screening, then rejected by the review criteria. 6/10 reviews found 0 included studies.

Yesterday the NHS banned all under 18 prescriptions of HRT for trans young people.

This ban was justified by 10 new studies that largely stated NO EVIDENCE for under 18s HRT exists.

The study underpinning this played one particular trick.

Let's briefly look at how the NHS rigged the game 1/5

I went to a preview screening of The Bride! last night. It was fun, but for a movie that is trying so hard to be feminist, the central message is essentially that a man can successfully lie and manipulate his way into a relationship.

Newcastle pubs ban AI art from breweries to protect local creatives As two pubs in Newcastle ban AI art, artists discuss the impact it can have on creatives.

"If I was to use ChatGPT for my designs rather than our designer Sean, that's taking money out of the local area into the hands of a multibillionaire ... removing value from the local community and local artists [and] into the hands of some of the richest people in the world."

Aside from the fact that the contemporary academy has structured the term "activist" to indicate that a given academic and their work should not be taken seriously, the rise of the "activist" in the academy, and activist fields, is coextensive with the opening of the academy to marginalized folks.
