My read of Leah's point was that if the scene is just to demonstrate alignment or whatever then it's just taking up real estate for no reason. The exchange in her example could happen offscreen.
Whereas if you cut this scene?
My counterpoint is that the conflict (the obstacle to what the character(s) want or need) is present throughout the scene, but that the peril they’re in isnt revealed until the end.
The conflict does’t have to be between the onscreen characters.
There is conflict in that scene. It just isn’t between the two fellas chatting.
This is the right take.
Conflict is just an obstacle to a character’s want or need. If there is no obstacle then the story is over, or at least paused.
Also, having characters bicker pointlessly to introduce “conflict” doesn’t count.
