Same, I always have to remind myself that I don't need 100+ plates and cutlery when I play games like Baldurs Gate 3 or Morrowind but you can bet that I will try to loot everything that is not bolted down.

During the final stages of production for Bubsy 3D a prototype for better 3D movement was created which later became the base for Syphon Filter, which is a classic PlayStation franchise. So yeah, Bubsy 3D deserves all the shame it gets for being terrible but without it a good game wouldn‘t exist.
What people tend to forget is that the PlayStation controller at the time didn‘t have thumb sticks, the dual analog controller would be released a year later, so you couldn’t directly copy the controls.

Mario 64 was released during the development of Bubsy 3D but since the IP wasn‘t worth much there was no way to rework the game without taking on a heavy financial burden. So while the game was doomed the devs still where thinking of ways how to adapt the 3d movement of Mario 64 to the ps

The genre of 3D platformer itself was still in its infancy with Crash Bandicoot and Mario 64 both releasing the same year as Bubsy 3D did. So there wasn‘t really a template they could follow and on PlayStation they only had games like Jumping Flash as reference.

So the team at Eidetic back then where mostly freshly out of college with only the studio leads being former Infocom staff. Meaning for a lot of them it was their first game and for all of them their first 3D game ever.

The funny thing is, Bubsy 3D actually was an important game for the PlayStation but not in the same way as other games where. This will take a few posts to explain due to the character limit but the tl;dr is: Without Bubsy 3D there would be no Syphon Filter.

I remember when Gothic 3 was released a magazine I read at the time was postponing their final score until the first major round of patches where done. It was fair but I understand that you cannot do this for every game and it still only captures the state of the game at review time.
