Polish state rail operator PKP Intercity is launching a series of special "unhurried" weekend journeys along picturesque routes in restored 1980s carriages with historical locomotives to celebrate its anniversary.
Northern California’s first condor egg in 100 years reported in redwood tree
Who COULDN’T use some good news? ‘ Scientists with the Yurok Tribe say that two of dozens of condors released to the wild in Humboldt County since 2022, to reestablish the endangered birds, have paired up, built a nest in a redwood tree and appear to be tending to an egg.”

If you - like myself - are scrapped for time to dig into papers these days, I discuss my recent urban stopover paper on this episode (which I learned was a first for TMIB)!
Image of an Alaskan bog with water and red moss in the foreground and trees in the background.
Let’s make 2026 the year of the bog. The world’s most unique and interesting plants, clean water, cooler climate. Bogs deserve our thanks, care, and deep respect. Please join me and love a bog today.

Thanks to @doc-brock.bsky.social for the invite for a seminar at SDSU this week! Had a great time chatting with faculty and grad students and learning more about the department. Love our San Diego biologist community!
Have you ever wondered what you would find if you could keep your eyes on a bee for more than a few meters? Us, too!

NSF GRFP is out, but they’ve unexpectedly made 2nd year students ineligible.
So amazing our team’s work is getting recognized on @npr.org for our successful bi-national translocation of California red-legged frogs. Was super fun chatting with Nate about the project!
Was in town a few months ago! What a great area. Found a few ammonites as well! The gulls were ferocious though for the whippy and cod and chips!
Spaghetti Factory also occupies the Fullerton UP depot! What other stations are they preserving/ruining?
NSF GRFPs terminated for those in graduate school and already attending Harvard, too.
Excited to see you at The Nat Emily!

“5/10: The EU's Deforestation-free Supply Chain Regulation (EUDR) aims to prohibit imports of seven products—including cattle, cocoa, rubber, and wood—unless exporters meet various burdensome compliance requirements, including due diligence and geolocation data. It is estimated the EUDR will potentially impact $8.6 billion worth of annual U.S. agricultural and industrial exports.” 7/10: Illegal logging and illegal mining in South America, particularly in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador, fuel environmental degradation and create unfair competition that harms U.S. businesses committed to responsible sourcing and compliance with environmental laws. These illicit activities, which usually involve transnational criminal organizations, distort global commodity markets by driving down prices and allowing bad actors to undercut legitimate American exporters.
I’m losing my mind here. USTR made a list of “Unfair trade practices” they’re retaliating against, complaint number 5 is that the EU cares too much about stopping illegal deforestation, complaint number 7 is that the South Americans are doing too much illegal deforestation
What’s the module footprint? And HOn3?

'Real Emo' only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence... 😆
An interactive map shows where IMLS funding is / was by state. I found this info very helpful for sharing locally about what such "invisible" support infrastructure provides for our communities. 2// www.imls.gov/map
Big thanks to all the co-authors (only Sky being @fieldgenomics.bsky.social), funding from The Rocky Mountain Conservancy, NSF GRFP, & @csu-ecology.bsky.social, the amazing volunteers & research assistants, & the biologists who collected eggs & invested in the conservation of this species! (4/4)
Our results will inform conservation decisions for this state endangered species about future translocations, captive rearing and breeding, and raise new questions about the underlying mechanisms that are responsible for the patterns we observed. (3/4)
We show that both disease tolerance and resistance likely play roles in shaping Boreal toad intraspecific variation in Bd susceptibility using a large experimental infection study while highlighting the flexibility of multi-state models to elucidate patterns in host resistance and tolerance. (2/4)
Amidst *everything* going on, I'm still proud to see my 2nd chapter of my PhD out in full in the latest special issue of @animalecology.bsky.social! doi.org/10.1111/1365... (1/4)
Chilling to see this list of terminated NIH grants. Research on Alzheimer's, HIV, rare diseases, vaccines -- gone. Cancer centers closed, training grants & fellowships terminated. Young scientists stranded. Patients waiting for treatments that'll never come. Just sad.
