Steve isn't self-sacrificial, at least not intentionally, but it's no question that he'd get hose three out of literal hell efore himself. It only makes sense. So now, he's stuck in the Upside Down with a half-dead nerd he barely knows. A journey through Steve's relationships with himself and the most important people in his life: a lesbian, a know-it-all kid et al., his ex-girlfriend, a DM (whatever the hell that is), the DM's uncle, and everyone else who seems to have wormed their way into his life since 1983. (Or, how getting trapped in Hell on Earth with Eddie "The Freak" Munson puts every other relationship Steve has ever had into perspective.)

"They're very dependable ladies," Eddie says into Steve's collarbone. He wipes his wet face against Steve's chest. "I'm sorry you weren't able to patch it up with Wheeler." Steve wants to laugh, but he can't. It's easy to be embarrassed by what he blurted out to Nancy in the RV and in the woods, but it doesn't make any of what he said less genuine. "It's easy to love Nancy," he admits, a thin smile stretching over his lips, "but it's like Robin said: I hate being alone. Being around Nancy is easy, you know? Because I know her and I love her, but I don't think I love her in the same way anymore-back when we were dating. She's with Jonathan, and she made it clear that she never really felt the same about me. It's just harder to accept than to move on, I guess." Eddie lets the confession settle between them. He pushes away from Steve's chest and finally looks up, his eyes red and wet from tears but his expression soft and wanting. He licks his lips, wetting the blood between the cracked skin, and swallows. "You wanna move on?" There's hope in the question, and Steve aches. They're dying and Eddie has hope in him. It's an enormous weight.
