i’ve been at #sej2026 Chicago this week, nerding out over microgrids and solar panels. Say hi if you haven’t yet!
There are a handful of syndicated climate content collaborations among news outlets that are well intentioned to boost overall climate coverage, however there is disturbing evidence of some outlets abusing this: Replacing laid-off reporters with free content from non-profit newsrooms.
yep I never understand this assumption as what you get without journalism is only PR
this is an old Vox article I wrote about air pollution data currently listed no. 3 of the most popular stories. It's been permanently on this list for the three(!) years since I wrote this, and linked to directly in Apple's weather app.
lesson from this: stop laying off climate/enviro reporters!

I rejoined the SEJ board after my own career transitions to get this over the finish line. Proud to see it happen.

First @davisallen.bsky.social exposed how the oil industry promoted recycling knowing full well it wouldn't address plastic waste
Now it is "advanced recycling,” the same problem dressed up as a new "solution" -- check out his report! climateintegrity.org/projects/adv...
AI overviews are ~very~ ~bad~ for legit and non-predatory information sources. AI overviews are often wrong or simplistic, but Google displays them prominently and distracts people from clicking through on websites with more reliable answers, websites that need the traffic to survive.
excited to see folks at #sej2025! say hi, commiserate together

It sounds like it (and living with purple AQI while we're at it)
I've been thinking about air quality reports too
LAST DAY to register for the Society of Environmental Journalists conference before rates increase.
It's also the deadline for hotel group rates so don't procrastinate any longer! conference.sej.org/registration...
Center for Public Integrity is shutting down: Wesley Lowery resigned as board chair. The nonprofit newsroom, founded in 1987, is in talks to turn over its archives to a watchdog group. www.cjr.org/news/center-...
Amazing things are possible if 1) you can afford enough lawyers to neutralize any case against you, 2) you can pick the court, and 3) you are confident you'd get a full pardon if you step in it.
