After many years of delays, looks like the McKinley School project might finally be kicking off -- it had another Pre-Development Conference. Supposedly $4.5M in construction costs.

- 29 housing units and 1 retail unit in the school itself
- 64-72 units in new buildings around the school

Downtown Seattle visitors rebound to 2019 levels, but workers lag behind Downtown Seattle now draws about as many visitors as 2019, but with far fewer workers. Crime has improved in some, but not all, of downtown, FYI Guy writes.

Downtown Seattle is still only at 64% of office foot traffic compared to 2019. To make that up with residents we would need to add 49,000 more homes and to grow the downtown population by 75% (from 109k to 190k).

The meeting she’s having is specifically with critics of the cameras. I don’t doubt that there are many crime victims who don’t support cameras, but today’s audience isn’t representative.

Exactly. The issue of cameras in public space is long since lost, unless you believe we should be getting rid of private cameras like Ring too, which we know police have ready access to anyway.

The real issues are things like how the cameras are used, how secure the data is, and who can access it.

Exactly, and this is a perfect example of the type of absolutism we need to get away from.

Most issues are nuanced!

There are also all sorts of other metrics than just “solving crimes” or “preventing crimes,” as well. Things like number of convictions or durability of convictions on appeal.

In the seven years since the pandemic, my fare has been checked on Sound Transit zero times. I ride at least weekly, and more like 3 days/week recently.

Why even have a fare at that point?

Completely agree. We desperately need more small-L liberals who are honest and transparent like this about weighing complex policy tradeoffs.

Yup, there is! The big PNW low-end food events all have more or less the same vendors. Basically west to Seattle area, east to Missoula, south to Salt Lake City.

These vendors make essentially all of their money for the going around to different events over the summer.

I’m excited to see what takes its place when an event producer has the freedom to start fresh.

What we need is something like a “Bite of Spokane”—$4 or $5 small samples from local restaurants, so you can explore and sample. Something more like Crave NW.

Pig Out is attracting a different vendor set and a different audience than it did 20 years ago. Young people are less interested than they were before.

There’s a complicated network of factors weighing on events like this, so please resist the urge to dumb it down.

I work in public space management.

It is extremely important to understand that the demise of Pig Out cannot be distilled to a single cause.

Yes, events like this are more expensive to stage. Yes, vendors and partners are requiring more commitments, sooner. But consumer demand is also changing.

Spokane for the win, as usual. 🙌

News: The state’s Growth Management Hearings Board has ruled that Mercer Island’s recently-adopted Comprehensive Plan failed to adequately plan for housing for all income levels.

The case, brought by @futurewise.bsky.social, was the first big test of HB 1220, one of WA’s big new housing laws.

For citizenship by descent, just proof of lineage—and you can go as far back as you need to. In my case it’ll be my great-great grandparents!

Just need to locate some birth certificates, which has already involved a lot of Google Translated emails and may involve a trip to Croatia this summer, 😆.

I’m working on family records that would allow me to obtain Croatian/EU citizenship! 🫡

Still have power near U Village in Ravenna but given the noises I’m hearing outside, I’m not confident of that continuing.
