One terawatt per year, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
We're making more progress on green energy than most people realize, and the Iran war may supercharge that trend.

A military historian sums up the colossal blunder of the Iran war, and gives a well-thought-out set of predictions for what might happen next:

The UK Labour Party is fulfilling a campaign pledge to end all hereditary positions in the House of Lords. Good - this was an embarrassing relic. Now get rid of the reserved seats for bishops next!

Reforestation: A greener future for planet Earth? by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
Deforestation is slowing and could reverse in our lifetimes. We might still be headed for a solarpunk world where futuristic skyscrapers rise amidst lush garden cities.

The city of Corpus Christi, Texas, is going to run out of water as soon as this year, because Republican leaders invited businesses that use lots of water to set up shop without regard for how much water there actually was:

Hurrah, Freethought Blogs lives! DNS problems finally fixed. New posts coming soon.

It's a really good story, a deeply humanizing account of life in a country that the media trains us to see as the enemy, and an indictment of just how badly America has failed for what it's done and is still doing to the Iranian people.
I've been reading Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Persepolis. It's an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran after the Islamic Revolution, moving to Europe as a student to live freely, and eventually becoming homesick (and homeless) and returning to Iran.
Judge Fred Biery: A defender of human rights and secularism, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
A hurricane of authoritarianism is crashing against the walls of the American constitutional system. Judges like this one are the last line of defense.

Scientific progress is both cool and body-horror-esque: Doctors saved a man with a critical, incurable lung infection by removing both his lungs (!) and keeping him alive that way for 48 hours (!!) with ECMO until he could get a transplant.

American autocracy, by @daylightatheism.bsky.social
The U.S. government is waging war on its own people. Other countries have thrown off the yoke of autocratic rule in the past, and their experience gives Americans a guide on what we should do.
