Hereditary peers to be removed from Lords as bill passes The bill abolishes the 92 seats reserved for peers who inherit their titles through their families.

The UK Labour Party is fulfilling a campaign pledge to end all hereditary positions in the House of Lords. Good - this was an embarrassing relic. Now get rid of the reserved seats for bishops next!

The city of Corpus Christi, Texas, is going to run out of water as soon as this year, because Republican leaders invited businesses that use lots of water to set up shop without regard for how much water there actually was:

It's a really good story, a deeply humanizing account of life in a country that the media trains us to see as the enemy, and an indictment of just how badly America has failed for what it's done and is still doing to the Iranian people.

I've been reading Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Persepolis. It's an autobiographical account of growing up in Iran after the Islamic Revolution, moving to Europe as a student to live freely, and eventually becoming homesick (and homeless) and returning to Iran.

Scientific progress is both cool and body-horror-esque: Doctors saved a man with a critical, incurable lung infection by removing both his lungs (!) and keeping him alive that way for 48 hours (!!) with ECMO until he could get a transplant.
