I would even characterize it as 'pay for access'. In my case, my US college paid. In my co-interns' case, IIRC her wealthy family was paying.

As a US merit scholar, I had one of these #unpaid #internships at a private UK gallery in the 90s. I'll add to this critique that I was de facto cut out of things like galas bc I couldn't afford to buy the clothes. It has always struck me as a bizarre arrangement. The owner was a $$$ celeb.
