I can't even find out what "hot wheels" means in this context because all that keeps coming up is Hot Wheels® train models

And I gasped and was so impressed at how he chose to handle it that I never heard what he actually said

Sondheim did a talk at my school senior year of college (the only time I skipped class) Someone in the audience asked one of those questions that's just a statement where your voice goes up at the end. He starts his answer saying "well the thing is" and rubs his middle finger on the side of his nose

My train has been stopped because it has "hot wheels" and so I'm going to miss the last commuter train out to the suburbs and I'm feeling very sorry for myself.

Erin! We took a queer studies class together in college. It felt like having a celebrity in the classroom to my little folkrock loving heart

This is my business philosophy, which is why my email newsletter subscriber base has stayed about the same for 6-8 years, but my open and click rate is way above industry average.

Just because Caitlyn Jenner is an objectively horrible person doesn’t mean it’s okay to deadname her. Please don’t.

So we've all gotta make up our own mountweazels to gum up the genAI works? I do not have time for that

I'm in a whatsapp with other well spouses and evidently chatgpt told one of them that their ill spouse had 5 years to live. 🫠
It's harder and harder to not engage with genAI but that still seems to be what we must do.

I'm used to "but the Internet says you buy used books" but this is new and I hate it

First customer in the store today who asked chatgpt what to read and told us she had done so 🙃
it also seems to have told her the recommended book was on our shelf, and where? (It was not, and if it was it would have been shelved alphabetically by the author's name, not to the shelf she pointed to)

Again: for any big liberal donor who wants to funnel millions into fixing this country's politics, the ROI on buying any struggling paper and simply tasking it with doing real reporting on local news is vastly higher than the same $$ given to some group that does mass ad buys every election year.

I'm not a historian or even an avid history reader but I'm sure that argument was made by many people who knew that chattel slavery was evil but you can't just end it because of the economy!

Heard some economics nerds tonight talking about how you can't just snap your fingers and get out of fossil fuels because of the capital involved and part of me understands that and part of me just thinks of the last chapter of Between the World and Me.

This is a tomato I'm growing from seeds I harvested from a cherry tomato that grew astonishingly well in a packed clay tree bed on my block. If it could thrive in that environment I'm hoping it will be even better (and not full of toxins) on my patio

Who takes out a loan to buy a boat? If you don't have boat money you don't buy a boat. I thought that was an easy one.

Too many people I love in the hospital (not me) and more boxes of books coming in and going out than I can comprehend.

My mom will be, I think. She moves to a rehab facility tomorrow with 3 new screws in her hip.
My longtime babysitting charge who is now in his 30s has a harder road, unfortunately.

I can't visit my mom in the hospital yet (need to arrange a car rental) but I can visit my neighbor's kid I grew up babysitting in the hospital tomorrow.

I've read 23 Agatha Christie novels since October, and other than that, 5 books that were not written for children. 😬

Surgery was successful (3 screws), now 4-6 weeks of rehab and using a walker. My only hopes that she follows the doctor's instructions lie in the fact that she is going to HATE using a walker and not being able to drive and will do anything to lessen that time.
