if I never see the Unity IDE for the rest of my life it'll be too soon...and yet I know I'll have to see (and maybe even USE) it again eventually. "Once more unto the breach," as Billy the Bard would say.

How are you, by the way? It's been awhile.

Live service games are especially rotten about it, as are a lot of RPGs. That does make some sense, but it still doesn’t change the fact that I’ll probably never get around to playing, say, Baldur’s Gate III because 136gb is a prohibitively large download for a 250-500gb SSD.

Not to get all tinfoil hat-wearing about it, but it does make me wonder whether those textures are just a scapegoat or red herring at some point — like at what point does it start becoming a problem of pricing people out of even (and especially) “free”-to-play games altogether?

At the risk of sounding like I’m trying to signal outrage or whatever (spoiler: I’m not), lately I’ve been thinking about how game download sizes have ballooned over the years. Sure, hi-res textures take up space, but it’s to the point where a single game can take up a single drive of space.

This weekend I'll be presenting at @rpihass.bsky.social's Critical Game Design Graduate Conference, and a fellow UB student will be demoing his board game at GameFest! I'm definitely looking forward to it!
