I don’t have all of my billing summaries available yet, but if my estimate is right there’s a minimum of another $2k that I personally spent after what insurance covered for things like labs, imaging, primary care visits and prescriptions.
A screenshot of my 2024 annual billing summary from my specialist hospital. The total charges are $47,890 and the total payments I personally made are $4996.
The American healthcare system is broken. I have a chronic health condition and even with *good* insurance, I still spent the equivalent of a years worth of groceries on my healthcare costs this year. And this summary is just for the hospital where I see my specialist and get treatment.

This is a great article but doesn’t include solutions so here’s one: build your community by engaging in activities that help people experience joy. It’s hard to feel nothing when you see someone else’s eyes light up with happiness. For me this is nature education work. What is it for you?
