💡Our findings may suggest the need for routine, full medication review when prescribing and dispensing medications for this older population in order to mitigate potentially harmful DDIs, especially those concomitantly prescribed.
2️⃣DDIs which increase bleeding risk were associated with a 2-fold increased risk of emergency department visit & functional decline; and
3️⃣DDIs, specifically those that are contraindicated, were associated with worse quality of life.
⚡️Key findings:
1️⃣Over 10 years, we found a declining trend in DDI prevalence involving drugs dispensed on the same day (co-dispensed), but a higher DDI prevalence involving drugs dispensed within 7days of each other (concomitant);
In this study, we used data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) to examine trends in drug-drug interaction (DDI) prevalence💊 & longitudinal associations w/health outcomes🏥 in older (≥65 years) adults in #Ireland.
Great to see the 4th paper from my @researchireland.ie PhD published open access in @britpharmsoc.bsky.social.

Thrilled to have successfully defended my PhD on the Pharmacoepidemiology & Pharmacoeconomics of Drug-Drug Interactions in the Older Community-Dwelling Population.
Thank you to my examiners, Dr Shane Cullinan & Prof Elisabetta Poluzzi, for an enjoyable discussion this afternoon.
