We hope to use this space to further questions around how and when balance sheets prove useful tools in answering research questions around financing transformations, changing international orders, new forms of money, and many more.

Please reach out if you have questions!

Put down social media.
Text your 5 best friends/group chats of choice that article you have been reading and get angry of them for not putting down everything and sending you an adequate response within 30 minutes.

I love a good "see this problem is not new my dear pk friends" quote, especially when it concerns the role of the state and financial markets

This was never about southern European states being "irresponsible" and fiscal policy.

To understand the Eurocrisis we need to understand the way balance sheets are connected and how banks in the core European banks were exposed to the US Dollar and the GFC.

I highly recommend the online tool!

If you're only going to read one paper about the Eurocrisis in your entire life, it should be this one.

The devil's in the details, but what makes this paper so strong is that it once and for all disproves the way many economists and politicians alike talk about the Eurocrisis

Our website is refurbished, our datasets are online, and you can now see what we've been up to in applying Monetary Architecture to explain financial cycles and balance sheet expansion & contraction.
Very excited to have this out and looking forward to the many more things to come!

I totally agree with your point in terms of taxation though
I think it really is a question of what people (feel) they get out of it and there the anglo-saxon needs based social security system does not help making people feel like they benefit from the system the way someone in central Europe would

My econ stats agree, my personal experience somewhat doesn't. I guess the London/rest UK divide in terms of CoL is far above average and there's also a big skewing in income distribution, which is why being "middle class" in London feels a lot worse in quality of living than rest of Europe

I actually think the big problem here is (the lack of) public services and how we account for it. Living in London comes with costs of e.g. public transport which would be around 3Γ— what it costs in most EU countries. Even worse for housing, which is notoriously underrepresented in data such as CPI

Join us at this year's Historical Materialism Conference - to discuss pressing issues such as rising authoritarianism and climate breakdown, the new age of Imperialism and the social foundations of AI.

If you're lucky you might even get to fight some cultural Marxists after a few drinks ;)

Thank you so much for organising this! Not only were the presentations amazing, but also very helpful in finding inspiration for my PhD proposal.
Plus I am now convinced that Leeds has by far one of the coolest PhD cohorts in the field of Economics
