Prime Minister Carney announces new Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations

April 21, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario

Canada’s new government is forging a new economic and security relationship with the United States. Prime Minister Carney has secured the best deal of any major U.S. trading partner – 85% of our trade with the United States remains tariff-free, the lowest average tariff rate in the world. As Canada approaches the Joint Review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), our aim is to preserve that unique Canadian advantage and to build on it.
To that end, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, today announced the creation of the new Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations. The committee will serve as a forum for expertise and strategy on all aspects of the Canada-U.S. economic relationship.
The Advisory Committee will include leaders from major sectors of the Canadian economy, representing extensive experience in business, investment, trade, and labour. It will be chaired by the President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, Dominic LeBlanc.
The Prime Minister is pleased to announce the following members:
Jean Simard
Candace Laing
Darryl White
Lisa Raitt
Tracy Robinson
Flavio Volpe
Ron Bedard
Ken Seitz
Dennis Darby
Lana Payne
François Poirier
Émile Cordeau
Luc Thériault
Magali Picard
Jonathan Price
Susan Yurkovich
Michael Harvey
Tabatha Bull
Cameron Bailey
Valérie Beaudoin
Erin O’Toole
Jean Charest
P.J. Akeeagok
Ralph Goodale
The Advisory Committee will hold its first meeting on April 27, 2026.
Prime Minister Carney thanks the members of the former Council on Canada-U.S. Relations for their service during a consequential period in the bilateral relationship.

1/ Camp of the Saints is a violent, racist dystopian novel that violent white supremacists and rank neo-Nazis consider canonical text.

Quoting Jason Kenney:
This is outrageous.

Amazon handles up to 80% of book distribution in North America.

A ban by Amazon is a virtual ban of book sales and distribution.

I have never read The Camp of the Saints (although I am now moved to do so,) so offer no judgement about its merits. But there is no denying that it is a widely read novel with a significant cultural impact on France, and around the world.

I very much hope that @pen_int, @PENCanada & adjacent groups will condemn this censorship at least as strongly as they condemn the removal of graphic sex novels from elementary school libraries.

N.B. an important Canadian connection: a brilliant Albertan, Dr. Nathan Pinkoski @NPinkoski, wrote the forward to the novel’s new English edition.

Our statement on Amazon's suppression of The Camp of the Saints in the United States:

Of course, Jason Kenney is going to bat for this book, and while he hasn't read it, says he's now "moved to do so."

Ford says no one in Canada is scrutinized like he is after backtracking on $28.9M private jet purchase | CBC News Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters Monday that "no one in the country" is more scrutinized than he is, as he explained his government's rationale for buying a $28.9-million private jet before qu...

I just can't with Ford playing the victim here.
1) You're a fucking premier. Of course your moves are being scrutinized!
2) Premiers get away with murder (or negligent homicide at the very least). You get so much less scrutiny than is actually warranted. Just stop.

This is a great read. I will add one more Harper issue—withdrawing stimulus too soon after the 2008 recession ensured the Bank of Canada had to keep rates lower for longer, which drove up consumer debt levels. Conservatives now complain those debt levels are too high (but blame Trudeau/Carney).

Just The Facts: Inflation is the Cost of Carney

April 20, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – In December 2020, right before Canadians were hit with the worst inflation in four decades, Mark Carney predicted that inflation was “unlikely to materialize to a serious extent.” Now, after a year as Prime Minister, inflation has again surged out of control with the largest one-month increase in over a year.

Overall inflation rose to 2.4 per cent in March, up from 1.8 per cent the month before. That includes a massive surge in the price of gas, which increased 21.2 per cent on a monthly basis, as Canadians continue to pay 15.6 per cent more at the pump compared to the US.

That means higher costs at the grocery store, with prices rising 4.4 per cent year-over-year, up from 4.1 per cent in February. Canadians with fresh vegetables on their shopping list were hit the hardest with prices increasing 7.8 per cent, the biggest increase since August of 2023.

All of this adds up to the highest food price inflation in the G7 for the fourth month in a row, proving that higher inflation continues to be a made-in-Canada problem. Money-printing deficits inflate the cost of everything, while Liberal taxes on food and gas increase costs even more, giving us the worst household debt in the G7.

Canadians were told to judge Carney by the costs at the grocery store, and since then, prices have only continued to soar. Canadians can’t feed themselves on illusory promises or run their cars on empty rhetoric; we need results that bring down the cost of government to bring down the cost of living.

Carney keeps recycling the same speech over and over while he drives up prices and taxes.

Meanwhile, Pierre has a real plan to unlock our resources, strengthen our country, and bring inflation down.

Prime Minister, enough speeches and theatre. It's time for results at home.

My dude, your leader has been recycling the same speech for two-and-a-half years now, insisting he's going to double-down on trickle-down economics.
Also, inflation is within the target range. If you bring it down further, you're going to stall economic growth. FFS.
