A slow worm????

She was granted withholding of removal from India *decades* ago, and had been living and working legally (including for the U.S. government!) ever since.
But with third country removals now a real option, TSA shared her data with ICE and they arrested her at the airport on her way to a job.
Texas' only licensed Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu legal interpreter is now languishing in a Raymondville detention center. She’s lived in America for 35 years: www.texasobserver.org/immigration-...
“This has never happened before,” one government employee tells WIRED. “I have never gotten a message like this from anyone.”
government workers are getting inundated with religion in the office -- read @telliotter.bsky.social:
Spotted a Medvi ad on Nextdoor—are they allowed to incorporate Zepbound trademarks in their ads?
Another “operation”-themed challenge coin circulating within DHS, this time at the Whipple Federal Building in Minnesota:
NEW:
Thousands of men are members of Telegram groups and channels that advertise and sell hacking and surveillance services that can be used to harass friends, wives and girlfriends, and former partners, new research has uncovered.
i dont even know and i was forced to do 18 of them
A modal box with the description "Use the arrows to find the distance between the two cars that matches the left image (9 of 9)". On the left is an image of the number "18" and the right is an intensely screwed up photo of two cars with jagged red lines attached to numbers of different amounts.
A modal box that says, "That was not quite right." and "Make sure the distance between both cars is equal to the number in the left image." on the left is an image of the number four and on the right is a photo of two cars on a confusing road with different sized numbers next to them
ok AI has gone too far. I don't want to do these CAPTCHAs anymore
One of my fave data stories this year was by @kbmorales.bsky.social and @davidarmstrongx.bsky.social about DOJ dropping thousands of criminal investigations as it shifted to immigration-related casework. The reporters used LLMs in a thoughtful way–sad that mgmt cannot see eye-to-eye on AI policies.
New: 150 unionized ProPublica workers are on strike TODAY over AI, layoff protections, wages, and more.
They're asking readers to not visit ProPublica or engage with content on other platforms. It's the first work stoppage of its kind at the newsroom.

"Amici curiae are 39 former career civil servants who worked in the Special Litigation Section of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).1The Special Litigation Section has primary responsibility for, among other things, enforcing the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, 34 U.S.C. § 12601, which authorizes the Attorney General to seek equitable and declaratory relief to eliminate a pattern or practice of illegal conduct by law enforcement agencies. Amici have occupied various roles within the Special Litigation Section, including serving asinvestigators, trial attorneys, deputy chiefs, and chief. Amici have also worked across nine presidential administrations, Republican and Democratic alike, and devoted a cumulative 390 years to enforcing this and other federal civil rights statutes. Amici file this memorandum to draw the Court’s attention to previous analogous matters in which the United States has found that local law enforcement agencies have engaged in patterns or practices of unconstitutional activity that violate the First Amendment rights of protesters and others whom they police and to explain that federal law enforcement agencies are subject to the same constitutional standards as any other."
39 former DOJ civil rights attorneys have filed a proposed amici brief in the civil rights lawsuit over DHS' deployment in Minnesota storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

SCOOP
A DOJ lawyer told a judge in Rhode Island that voter rolls data the agency has collected from states was being kept separate, and no analysis was being done to identify voting irregularities.
That wasn't true....

Anthropic is back in business across the federal government after winning a preliminary injunction. Curious to hear whether government workers are actually using it again though. Reach out to me!

Wild and a great example of why AI can’t replace humans in media. Generative AI can’t make these kinds of logical connections or do this kind of research. For this, you need a nerd (complimentary).
UPDATE: CBP got back to us acknowledged the non-profits we talk about in our story are MWRs, and had "received authorization to conduct limited commercial activities on CBP-occupied property." Unclear if the coins were cleared for sale, but MWR "policy and procedures are being reviewed and updated."
One group still has this "North American Tour" challenge coin for sale. "FAFO" stands for "Fuck Around and Find Out", a phrase popularized by the Proud Boys.
They also took down a challenge coin commemorating Operation Midway Blitz, the enforcement surge last year in Chicago. You should read @awinston.bsky.social and my reporting about the government's deployment of specialized Border Patrol agents there: www.wired.com/story/border...
Screenshot of a challenge coin for sale that depicts Charlotte's Web characters in riot gear
After we contacted one of the groups, they removed multiple listings we identified, including the "Charlotte's Web" challenge coin that the children's book publisher HarperCollins said was an "unauthorized use of the intellectual property associated with a beloved children’s book"
CBP wouldn't explain why these groups were using the addresses of government facilities, or why some of these groups seemed to have dedicated @cbp.dhs.gov email addresses.
NEW: I found IRS paperwork for several nonprofits whose addresses matched Border Patrol stations. Some of the groups, named after the military's "morale, welfare, and recreation" program, were selling challenge coins commemorating last year's enforcement surges: www.wired.com/story/us-bor...
Just had this from Planet Labs, the US government have asked satellite imagery providers for "voluntarily" restrictions on access to satellite imagery. Given a lot of them provide satellite imagery to the USG we can probably guess the outcome of not acquiescing to that request.
A must-read. Grateful that @wired.com reporters like @milesklee.bsky.social are willing to do the kind of important field reporting that journalists at other publications simply do not have the stomach for
A WIRED investigation has identified multiple members of the paramilitary units behind some of the most egregious immigration enforcement actions of the last year. from @awinston.bsky.social and @regret.bsky.social
NEW: i took a look at legislation @sanders.senate.gov is intro'ing today to impose a data center moratorium “until legislation is enacted that safeguards the public from the dangers of AI"
it's a major line in the sand for progressives looking to tie data center opposition w AI safety
And it’s also a gift. 🎁
Gotta say that @milesklee.bsky.social joining @wired.com has been such a perfect fit. That combo is up there with combining peanut butter and chocolate in the all-time list, imo.
If you're at an airport today, we'd LOVE to know what it's like interacting with ICE instead of TSA. You can DM me or find me on Signal at Vittoria89.82.
