“Bombing Iran in the hope the people would rise up against the regime” is basically the same logic as Barry from Four Lions who wanted to bomb a mosque to unite the ummah and “radicalise the moderates”
Humanitarian journalism is a moral calling to document human suffering. But in practice, it’s an ethically murky undertaking. An Essay by Cathy Otten
Maha Hussaini's words couldn’t resonate more today after Israel killed five Al Jazeera journalists on Sunday. At least 192 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 according to @pressfreedon.bsky.social.
We could stop boats in a couple of weeks - allow people to apply for asylum online from wherever they are in the world. But that wouldn't reduce non-white immigration, so we can't even mention it as an option.
There's a central contradiction in UK politics right now: it's 'sensible' politics to want to reduce non-white immigration, but no political party can actually say that this is what they are doing, so we have to pretend this is about boats.

Who could possibly have seen this coming?
It's akin to the M&S 'trans' employee complaint, entirely predicated on the complainant's belief that because the employee was tall they must be trans.

These warnings were even given to senior, well-established youth figures who have spent a long time working in an unpaid capacity for the party. In one case, a young member’s non-Labour employer was contacted by a senior backbench MP, who warned the employer to be “wary” of the student, and to “not trust them” after they were unable to attend an organised study trip to Israel. Others have allegedly been offered secure jobs after graduation if they toe the party line (Labour strongly refutes this claim).
To suppress opposition to a genocide (in this and other ways) is to collude with that genocide. This is particularly true in states like the US, UK and Germany where successful opposition could deprive the perpetrator of its key accomplices and enablers.

'This is not about Hamas, nor milit objectives, nor the hostages whose release Netanyahu has sabotaged. Rather, this is a genocidal campaign that continues the denial of Palestinian freedom and seeks to impose Jewish supremacy' @nimersultany.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Keir Starmer @Keir_Starmer • Aug 7 .. . I said that if you enter this country on a small boat, you will face detention and return. I meant it. [video: migrant detainees with faces blurred being escorted out of the UK]
As far as I can tell, Keir Starmer thinks "Labour" means "the UK can must shall and will become the country we are as seen in 'Children of Men'".
every single woman I've brought it up with at some point has been sexually assaulted before, myself included, and not a single one of these men has ever cared about the reality of that, but now it's maybe looking like some black and brown men are moving to Britain and oh, suddenly women are people?
This guy needs to write the great LinkedIn novel
BBC International Editor Jeremy Bowen has confirmed that the entire Al Jazeera team in Gaza City has been killed.
Because I am angry I will share this again. One of the reasons that Israel is able to target individuals so precisely is that it collects every phone call in Gaza and stores the recordings in Microsoft Azure, then uses AI to analyze and pick targets.
The only reason you assassinate every Al Jazeera journalist left in Gaza is because you don’t want anyone to document the genocide you are about to accelerate.
Any politician and any journalist who cannot call this genocide for what it is, is complicit, and I hope history remembers you as such.
Will our journalists and MPs ask the difficult questions about who is "foreign" and who "criminal"? People born in the UK and who commit minor drug offences when still young (for example) stand to be permanently barred from the UK and sent to places they've never been for "abusing our hospitality".
A reminder that the Israeli government does not allow any international journalist into Gaza. That’s how they have killed more journalists than most conflicts combined since WWII while claiming that all the journalists they’ve killed were actually enemy combatants.
Israel has acknowledged that Anas and his crew were deliberately targeted. Palestinian reporters are being systematically picked off and slaughtered as the West stands by, issuing anodyne statements and tacitly (or directly) supporting a genocidal campaign.
Journalism is not a crime.
Israel, which does not allow foreign journalists into Gaza…has killed 237 journalists since the war started, according to Gaza’s government media office.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said at least 186 journalists have been killed in the Gaza conflict.

NEW: Parliament Square, London right now.

But there is no need to wait for the worst case scenario, because the worst case scenario is already here.
Destruction of 70% of homes, and almost all infrastructure.
2m people displaced.
People dying of starvation every day.
About 100 people killed every day, as they look for food.
Genocide.

In banning a protest organisation as a “terorrist group” the Labour government have violated some of the fundamental norms of a democratic society. This should be a resigning matter for Yvette Cooper.

Something I have never quite understood is why reprints of "classic" fiction invariably come with an introduction that tries to explain and contextualise what you are about to read. They are hardly ever very good or interesting and never as good as the novel you are about to read
Amid rising starvation deaths in Gaza, the Israeli government is considering a full takeover and occupation of the Palestinian territory. Writer and analyst Amjad Iraqi says that would be "a new iteration of a failed and destructive policy."
Usually the Anglosphere moves in similar directions, e.g. immigration, but the trans backlash in the UK looks like an insane outlier to me. It's gone beyond women's sports and prisons, now you can't even work retail? And JK Rowling decides which corporations are anti-trans enough to shop at?
“Is there internet on your iPhone? It isn't connected, it's just a camera. I'm envious of that. I hate it. About 10 years ago, Katy Perry was talking to me about the internet armies of all the girl singers, and how cruel and rancid they were. I said, "Well, I wouldn't know because I'm not on the internet." She said, "So, who are your rivals?" I just looked at her. It was my steely look. I said, "Katy, I don't have rivals. I have friends. All the other women singers that I know are friends. Nobody's competing. Get off the internet and you won't have rivals either."
I fucking love Stevie Nicks for this
The ICC prosecutor was preparing charges against Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, but that case is now "dead in the water."
The two deputy prosecutors overseeing the Palestine investigation are signing filings in alternating months to "try to avoid sanctions."
Le Monde confirms MEE reporting that one of Netanyahu's lawyers spoke to Duterte's lawyer, who conveyed an apparent threat to the ICC prosecutor the next day.
Sickening.
