You only need to dwell peacefully in your in-breath and out-breath for a short while, and you will begin to restore stability and peace within yourself. ~Tich Nhat Hanh @LowlandZen.bsky.social
Some say that Zen is too simple to make a real difference.
Trust the process.

I find it odd when people see the smoke from fires like this and say it’s ‘terrible for the environment’, when this is exactly what all of the oil would have done to the environment anyway, yet people don’t think of it like that 🧐
Maybe current world affairs will be an turning point for us all 🌳🌴🍃

I had the chance to talk about my new book with the LA Compassionate Heart Sangha yesterday. The sangha leader paid me the highest compliment: he said it was like Thich Nhat Hanh himself had written my Declaration of Interdependence.
This is a lovely flower one of the sangha members gave me.
Meditation is being aware of what's going on: in your body, in your feelings, in your mind, and in the world. ~Tich Nhat Hanh @LowlandZen.bsky.social
This past week has been a tough one; I’ve had a close relative spend time in hospital to undergo an operation, and another who resides in the Middle East has been subject to some pretty frightening circumstances.
Meditation has been my refuge.

Friends—You belong, just as you are, and I’m glad you’re here. The unity that suppresses community is not true unity. The oneness that denies diversity is not true oneness. The strength build on hate is not true strength.
This is the message of my new book On Mindful Democracy—check it out!

Anti‑reification: not treating ideas like solid things.
It means society, rules and customs are made by people and can change.
We shouldn’t lock complex life (relationships, work, culture, habits, beliefs) into simple boxes. Stay open‑minded and think critically.

Dear friends, I’ve started a new Substack: Zen and the Art of Democracy. My goal is to reimagine democracy by returning to foundations—we all suffer, we all want to be happy, and we can only be happy if we learn to care for ourselves, each other, and the world we share.
Please subscribe and share!
Zen circle with caption: Our aim is to transform the suffering in our heart, and to offer happiness to our family and those around us. Our happiness multiplies exponentially when we see that we can bring happiness to those around us. ~Tich Nhat Hanh
Transforming our own suffering has the immense benefit of positively transforming the lives of those around us; when we model this inner work, we implicitly empower others around us to do the same.

"You are me, and I am you. Isn't it obvious that we "inter-are"? You cultivate the flower in yourself, so that I will be beautiful. I transform the garbage in myself, so that you will not have to suffer."

Good morning my friends! This day is filled with opportunities. Make of them what you will. You've got this. Have a wonderful Thursday! ❤️
We could all do with stepping back, breathing and taking a moment to reflect on the intricate details of what’s right in front of us, once in a while (or probably more lol).
Take a break from the online rage bait to appreciate the pleasure in the simple things.

Zen circle with caption inside that’s reads: We should live our daily life in such a way that the living Dharma inhabits us in every moment. Brushing our teeth, taking a shower, cooking our breakfast—we do these things so that the living Dharma is with us all the time. ~Tich Nhat Hanh
I practice mindfulness whilst washing my hands at work. Those extra moments spent handwashing are a great way to ground yourself, and not get swept up with the hustle & bustle, or workplace drama.

Stopping is the basic Buddhist practice of meditation. You stop running. You stop struggling. You allow yourself to rest, to heal, to calm. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Give Yourself Time To Be Free Suppose you need to be at the airport at ten o'clock. You think that you have time to linger and wait until later to leave your house. But maybe there is heavy traffic, you arrive late, and you have to run. You can always plan so that you have plenty of time to walk as a free person at the airport. It should become a habit to plan so that we have plenty of time to do each thing. That's a good habit that everyone can have. ~Ticht Nhat Hanh, Peace Is This Moment
I allow one-hour for my commute to work, which usually only takes 40 minutes.
Those ‘spare’ minutes allow for heavy traffic or any accidents, but more importantly, if the journey is hassle free, I get to walk mindfully from the car park to the main reception.

Same photos as yesterday, but processed and cropped differently. I enjoy how such changes can shift our perception of both image and subject.
