As well as presenting at the #IATEFL2026 #TDSIG and #ESOLSIG PCE on Monday, I’m also presenting at the main #IATEFL26 conference. My talk has the cheery title “What have we done? ELT, global destruction and a more transformative model”. Thursday 23 Apr at 11.20 in the Charlotte Room. See you there!

Who might benefit from a sudden rise in oil prices? Maybe a country that recently used force to take control of another country that happens to have the world’s largest oil reserves..? Is this what the war with Iran is really about?
Our first event for the Future Skills for TESOL project!
This is a series of events that we are integrating into our courses, designed to give our students opportunities to engage with local English language learners in order to develop useful language teaching and research skills.
Thanks to all!
This initiative adds a useful practical dimension to our #MScTESOL, allowing students to engage meaningfully with local #ESOL learners to gain insight into their needs, priorities and lived experiences. I think the ESOL learners are benefitting too 😃
What about the carbon footprint?

People fleeing war and persecution aren’t asking for much - just to be treated with dignity and given the chance to rebuild their shattered lives.
Everyone has the right to be safe and to feel like they belong.

No surprise here
I’m at the #baal2025 conference at @uofglasgow.bsky.social . Lots of the sessions are taking place in the GU Union, and I’m getting flashbacks to my undergrad years. I’m pretty sure I saw the Tom Robinson Band here back in the day.

It is insane to me that the richest man in the world is using his global megaphone to call for millions of British people to be rounded up and deported (including my family) and somehow this isn’t even news.

Nice cosy room for my #IATEFL2025 talk, starting at 3.05pm today. Maybe see you there?
All set for #IATEFL2025. Edinburgh this year, which seems strange to me for some reason. Lovely weather - so far.
“Sponsored by…” 🙄
At this year’s #IATEFL2025 conference in Edinburgh, I’ll be exploring the concept of “empowerment” and “empowering ELT”, a popular phrase which, in my view, doesn’t adequately encapsulate what needs to be done. Come and join me on 8th April at 3.05pm.
Last year I reviewed 5 books for the #ELT journal, which you can read here: academic.oup.com/eltj/article/7…
Next Thursday at 4.30pm I’ll be presenting and discussing the relevance of these books to the UK #ESOL context. You can register free here: forms.office.com/pages/response
