The extension makes it really easy to get precise inside measurements. You can duplicate without reading the numbers like your tool. A tape ruler can work for inside measures. You have to add the size of the case to the number. Or lock the tape to duplicate the length.
Good tools cost more. Cheap tools sell more. I'd guess carpenters use tape rulers more often because of $ and speed. Unlike woodworkers, most carpenters don't need precision. The folding rulers are easier to break when working fast.
