Block party takes over Chinatown for second year in a row For the second year in a row, a block party is taking over Edmonton’s Chinatown this weekend.

Amazing work by Will, Wilson and the MANY volunteers it takes to put together a community event like Van bLoc party!

🧵 I was excited to visit Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre for their first ever art market today!

Ociciwan is an incredibly important part of Edmonton’s art scene. Their work supports & showcases Indigenous contemporary artists & designers right here in the heart of our city 🍓

But we're not done. We need to keep building the momentum of a vibrant downtown.

Join me in building the momentum to ensure Ward O-day'min continues to see investments in our core services, safety and affordability.

Over the past four years I've been working to ensure that O-day'min has a strong voice for those of us that call downtown home.

In this time we have had historic investments in our core from building affordable housing, investments in safety and ensure the heart of our city thrives.

The deadly incidents on our roads this weekend underscore the urgent need to address traffic safety in our city.

Council has directed City administration to develop a plan to deploy Peace Officers to help fill the gap left by the Province’s cancellation of automated enforcement.

This plan will also include targeting modified vehicles that create disruption, and often danger, in our communities.

I remain committed to working closely with EPS and administration to find solutions that will deter reckless driving and keep our streets safe.

Looking forward to continued conversations about the Downtown Action Plan and how we can bring more life to this already incredible neighbourhood.

The over the past couple of weeks we have heard how the Downtown Action Plan will include a new 104 St Entertainment District.

This initiative would allow patrons to enjoy beverages from local establishments while strolling the market, enhancing vibrancy & supporting our downtown economy.

There is nothing like our Farmers Market. With over 45 vendors each weekend it’s a summer staple in our downtown core.

We’re fortunate to have this market right in the heart of Ward O-day’min, providing opportunities to eat, drink, and shop while supporting local artisans & farmers.

It's a beautiful day for ceremony!

I was delighted to join Westglen School for their annual traditional powwow.

This is always a wonderful event to bring community together and a great example of reconciliACTION.

I encourage all Edmontonians to make a conscious effort to support businesses affected by construction — go out of your way to visit them and shop local if you're able!

The City of Edmonton is continuously looking for ways to minimize disruption as much as possible.
I appreciate Edmontonians’ patience as we go through these projects & encourage the use of resources including:
▪️Building Edmonton map
▪️Road & bridge disruption dashboard
▪️Construction notifications.

This means creating more inviting community spaces, such Ward O-day'min's newest green space - Warehouse Park!
While I’m excited to see these investments in our community, it’s vital to acknowledge that construction comes with disruption and inconvenience.

🧵This week I was excited to kick off "Construction Season" in Edmonton with Acting Deputy City Manager, Craig Walbaum.
As Edmonton grows, the City is finding opportunities to help people connect to the spaces and places that are most important to them.

Speaking of upstanding individuals in our community, we moved forward with our recommended appointments to the City’s Agencies, Boards, and Commissions. Thank you to everyone who applied! The new round of appointees is a great showcase of the talents and commitment of Edmontonians to our community.

While this is a significant loss to our local democracies, I'm hopeful that people will hold themselves to a high standard regardless and continue serving Edmontonians with integrity and respect.

We also heard the annual Integrity Commissioner's Report. Sadly this will likely be our last - the Province's Bill 50 will remove all Code of Conduct policies from Councils across Alberta. This means less accountability to Edmontonians and fewer checks against unethical and antagonistic politics.

While better than where we started, I know any increase has an impact. As we continue to recover from unprecedented inflationary pressures and structural budget issues, I'm hopeful we'll be able to continue to deliver savings and more effective services for our growing city.

At City Council, we finalised the property tax levy for 2025. City staff initially presented an 8.1% increase, and Council worked to get this down to a projected 6.1% during our December budget deliberations. Last week, we reviewed the final count which had been further decreased to 5.7%.

I look forward to seeing how we can prevent vacancies before they happen and keep small businesses thriving in our communities

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Finally, I moved a motion that asked staff to come back with a program to help prevent commercial vacancies in key areas. While we are looking at a grant to help fill already empty storefronts, this program will let us look at how we can keep businesses in place.
