BBC World Service - The Conversation, How war shapes women's lives The impact of war and peace, with experts from Spain and Kenya

Fascinating discussion about how war effects women. ~90 of all peace deals exclude women, and yet they receive the brunt of consequences of war.

AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.

When AI in public schools comes up, I think it's always worth remembering the articles about the schools the tech barons send their kids to, where screen time is either outright banned or severely limited, and the kids have multiple arts and handicrafts lessons. Their kids learn to knit.

In Quebec City, Military Culture Collides with Far-Right Extremism | The Walrus White-supremacist groups are getting armed. They’re also becoming more normalized

Today the Quebec government passed Bill 9 -- just another in a long line of bigoted pieces of legislation that legalizes descrimination against people who wear religious symbols. I wrote about the impact of these pieces of legislation and the rise of the far right here:

This is Victor. We are going for our families.

an excerpt from a text conversation that occurs in a mix of French and English

Person 1 writes in French - I’ll bring it next time

Person 2 responds in French - Thank you very much. with a heart emoji at the end.

Person 1 adds in English - It’s a little late. With a laughing emoji at the end.

Person 2 responds first in English - That’s my bad. Then in French - I didn’t pay attention to the publication date. With a laughing emoji.

The Warehouse: A Public Library Art Takeover in NYC (April 4-June 27) A Community-Based Exhibition at Bedford Library in Brooklyn

“Fascism is constantly and deliberately shrinking the definition of who is considered a person. Art, especially art made by and for marginalized populations, does the opposite. It expands and complicates our understanding of the human condition.”

My favourite thing about the PhD defense is when the examiners each begin their questioning with some variation on “Thank you so much for this work you have done and the invitation to think with you about it”.
