On the other hand, no one ever lost money by telling billionaires what they want to hear. The airwaves are full of the oligarchs' minions, reciting their creeds as if these were some kind of arcane truth they've stumbled across. Almost every political conversation is dominated by these elite lies.

We claim to treasure free speech, above almost anything. But on the most critical issue, very few of us are free to speak. The majority are silenced by fear of censure or loss of employment. This conspiracy of silence looks more like what you'd expect in an authoritarian regime than in a democracy.

One problem is that many articulate, confident people are forbidden by the terms of their employment to speak out. To acquiesce in the power that threatens everything is acceptable and uncontroversial. To contest it brings your employer "into disrepute" and could have you sacked.

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet.
This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

18/ Las reglas están, pero nadie las hace cumplir. Irán filtra un estrecho y el mundo negocia. USA invoca reglas que no ha firmado. China se beneficia del desorden sin mover un dedo. El derecho del mar, que debería ser el árbitro, es papel mojado.

17/ La realidad es que estamos ante un nuevo orden incierto. Las instituciones que construimos después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y Caída del Muro —ONU, UNCLOS, el sistema de comercio multilateral— se diseñaron para un mundo que ya no existe. Y se nota.

2/ Para entender por qué, hay que hablar de UNCLOS. Suena a siglas aburridas pero es importante. Es la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar. Firmada en 1982. Básicamente la constitución de los océanos: las reglas que dicen quién puede hacer qué en el mar.

1/ La situación en Ormuz no ha cambiado. Irán sigue filtrando el estrecho. Pasan los aliados, los demás fuera. Pero hay algo de lo que no se habla y que como profesor de Náuticas me preocupa especialmente: lo que está pasando rompe el derecho marítimo internacional. 🧵

The litmus test of democracy in 🇪🇺 should not be limited to being anti-Putin & not being openly corrupt (yet), as EU liberals uphold. Democracy means freedom based on economic, social & political equality, being uncompromising against violations of human rights anywhere, rejecting any form of racism.
