Say it with me.
Government services are not businesses.
Governments are not businesses.
Neither should be run as a business.
If you think they should, you have the fiscal understanding of a 4 year old.

Final week for Alto consultations!
Feedback closes April 24. If you support high-speed rail in Canada, now’s the time to show up and make your voice heard.
Every action counts.

Fascinating article that emphasizes how important human connection is .. we need our communities, we need to be able to gather and gossip in third places … we need good, reliable information we can trust.
You might sneer at that because the country ended up with worse, but shouldn’t a party listen to voters?
I’m curious that Americans almost never consider electoral reform. It’s insane to think that TWO parties can adequately represent 342 million people. A lot of people who refused to vote for the lesser evil were trying to pull the Dems back from Republican-lite policies.
100% agree. A lot of Cons voters have no concept of hypocrisy – they LIKE the concept of rules for others and no constraints on their guy.
Personally I would consider whether repeated and constant exposure to a disease known to cause brain damage and cognitive/concentration difficulties might be, you know, doing those things.
The war on public schools, including systematic underfunding & shifting funding away from public schools, especially to charter and private schools, is part of the mission of re-segregating America.

So weird that his attacks on healthcare and education don't register, but even his loyal supports were raising eyebrows at his fancy new plane. Hard to pretend that he's a "man of the people" with a private jet.
Free public transport in Luxembourg.
Within five years, tram passengers increased fivefold, from 6.2 to 31.7 million between 2019 and 2024. Passenger numbers rail: from 25 to 31.3 million, bus increased by 20,000 passengers per day to 145,000 daily commuters.

Why isn't this covered by legislation on corruption? You know that a low-level public servant can't accept tickets to a show ... it's unbelievable that judges are getting away with this.
So I learned yesterday that the speed limit on the street I live on is supposed to be 30. Ha! I never drive fast, but other people treat this street like a racetrack. (It's wide and straight). Do speed limit matter if there are no other traffic calming measures?
"Voluminous empirical data show that most of the public cares about climate change... But this overwhelming majority does not realize it’s a majority, partly because its existence is not reflected in most news coverage. In other words, they have been a silent majority but also a *silenced* majority"
Mamdani: When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich
Well, today we're taxing the rich...
We are subsidizing men, who have been convinced by advertisers (who probably don't drive trucks), that they can only be seen as masculine if they drive an over-priced jacked up gas-guzzler. Sigh ... we need training on how to view ads with critical eyes.
Sigh ... the cruelty is not worth the paltry savings. Refugees are vulnerable - we should be helping them, not hurting them. ccrweb.ca/en/canadian-...
At best, continued use of fossil fuels is kicking the can down the road.
The transition will have to happen at some point. Surely it's far better to get ahead of the curve and get on with it now?
I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵
Governments should in fact be ashamed of responding to a crisis in a way that makes this crisis and the next one hurt us more
They should be *increasing* taxes on luxury SUVs, private jets, cruise ships etc to fund generous subsidies for public and active transport, better services, small EVs
You know what would stick it to Iran any many countries that try to control us with access to oil? Pivoting hard into renewables. Solar panels on every building, solar fields integrated into our farmlands, and wind turbines dotting every coastline. Take some of that ill-gotten tariff revenue and
I just signed a bill to rename Minnesota’s community solar program after Speaker Melissa Hortman.
Melissa was a true champion of solar and I was proud to sign this in honor of my dear friend.
Smart! 🎉 I wish we had leadership willing to push for this.
It’s time for price caps on gas to stop oil companies from price-gouging Canadians — and a windfall profits tax on war-time oil revenues, so the government can invest that money in the public interest.

Striking that the Liberals and Conservatives offer the same response to pain at the pump: siphon money out of the public purse instead of Big Oil’s profits.
People who bike, use transit, or drive EVs are now subsidizing people who choose to drive gas-guzzlers. This is so stupid.
Sigh … so much for climate change, eh? Gas prices are too low to change people’s behaviour – why are we subsidizing gas-guzzlers? 🙁
Today's News Poll Question is, do you agree with the federal NDP that algorithmic pricing should be banned? Vote now at WindsorNewsToday.ca/poll.
Really striking how few options Americans have. I see posts screaming at people for not voting, but sometimes the choices are terribly unappealing. I wonder when Americans will start to consider electoral reform.
This weekend I gave a presentation to a group of mostly college-aged folks and had a little line at the beginning of my slides that described it as an "AI-free presentation made by a human, for humans" and I had to pause for clapping at that part
you love to see it
Oh it’s true. More info on how Ford’s underfunding healthcare in Ontario causing “hallway healthcare” and gaps in services, and how he’s funding private, for-profit companies to fill that very need of services instead. Wait a year for cataract or knee surgery in hospital or pay now at clinic #ONpoli
