We are right on the edge of land, near the mouth of a coastal creek. Across a narrow stretch of water is a small island, and in the water is a dying structure of wood, possibly part of the memory of a pier that existed decades ago. It has two vertical poles perhaps a metre and a half apart, and a cross piece connecting them. Another cross piece has fallen off at one of its ends, so it leans diagonally into the water. On the horizontal cross piece are five little black cormorants, and another two perch on the diagonal one. A black swan sails behind the right hand pole.
