I mourn all she lost so often. I wish the world could’ve seen her play. She was astonishingly, almost unbelievably good. Due to all of the Black families hard work, Black girls were able to play soccer freely in our area. We even have an all Black girl team locally. So our struggle was not in vain🤍

I cried so hard today thinking about it, but her sacrifice paved the way for me to play. I was never as good, but I was able to play freely and enjoy the sport 🥹🤍

WHICH HAPPENED AT THE HANDS OF A RACIST COACH. HE TOLD ALL HIS PLAYERS TO TAKE OUT THE BLACK GIRL. HE SAID DONT LET HER TAKE YOUR SPOT ON THE OLYMPIC TEAM. The entire game they were pulling illegal moves on my sister. Eventually she went down & never came back up. But that’s a story for another day.

Because my parents sued the school. The parents of the other Black girls joined the case. By their sophomore year, we won. My sister ended getting a full ride scholarship for her soccer abilities and was even scouted for the Olympics before her careered ending injuries.

That read “NO N!GG3RS ALLOWED”. This was 2004 mind yall. As it turned out this was a common practice in my city. Unbeknownst to my parents, Black girls had been systematically kept out of playing soccer at the local and state levels for years. Much of my early childhood was spent in court rooms

The school let my sister try out, but they put her and the other four Black girls on the junior varsity team. The school administrators then canceled the junior varsity team’s schedule. The jv girls didn’t know this until they arrived to their first game. The fence was locked, and there was a sign

Thinking about how my sister was a nationally ranked soccer player at age 14 but didn’t get to play her freshman year of high school because white parents didn’t want a Black girl to “outshine” their supposedly “superior race” children.

Because where I’m from most of the public swimming pools were STILL unofficially segregated, so neither my sister nor i could get official swim lessons as children. Our mother taught us how to swim in private pools and natural bodies of water. Racism took so much from us.

Wait okay full story: my niece looked so much like my sister, but she’s white passing, so she’ll (hopefully) never know the horrid and debilitating levels of racism my sister and i have endured. I felt all of that grief and rage and pain after looking at one photo of her at her first swim lessons
