one fascinating dynamic that seems to drive both the UK/US new right is this idea that contemporary society needs to emulate Bukele's authoritarianism against crime when crime rates are, on the whole, much lower than they were in the 20th century

I'm in this Moby Dick and I don't like it.
@orkneylibrary.bsky.social I think at least one of these applies?

Cherry trees are quite short-lived & some have died - often blowing down; there are two or three young replacements in tree cages in your pic though.
Graphic with an illustration of a diverse group of people dressed in various types of workwear. Text says: Protect trans workers. We need action to keep trans people safe at work. Write to your MP. Ask them to say no to exclusion. tinyurl.com/FixTheRegs

Painting of a woman in a blue dress riding a bicycle. The background is a cityscape with strange geometry.

Districts with the most protected cycle lane access have more than three times as many women cycling to work as those with the least protected cycle lane access.
And districts with the most women who cycle to work have nearly six times as much protected cycle lane access as those with the fewest.
Imagine young women having the temerity to say they want to date guys who [insert basically any desire, requirement or simple preference for beliefs or behaviour in a partner]. Do they think they're real people who matter or something?
• Every 20 minutes, someone is the victim of an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. That's three an hour, 72 a day, more than 26,000 a year. • Every day, at least one person is so seriously injured by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver that they need lifelong care. That's more than 360 people a year whose lives are forever changed for the worse. • Every week, at least one person is killed by a driver who is not insured. That's more than 50 people a year whose lives are cut short, more than 50 families a year who lose a loved one. • Every day, there is an average of 300,000 uninsured vehicles on UK roads. The total number across the year is over 1 million. • Every year, using government figures, we estimate that uninsured and hit-and-run drivers cost the economy almost £2.4 billion.
Not so fun facts about uninsured drivers: they kill and maim a lot of people.
Dr Antonia Thomas features in a new Time Team video on prehistoric rock art, contrasting that found on Ilkley Moor with the Neolithic carvings in Orkney and the Ness of Brodgar.
Anyway, this but for helmets and cyclists
People love to yell at other cyclists about wearing helmets because it's a convenient way to avoid both their responsibility as drivers and the systemic factors that make biking in cities so dangerous
I wear a helmet. I recommend other people wear helmets. But helmets are not a solution for unsafe infrastructure. That's why so many of us get mad at finger wagging comments about helmets. It hides the real risks to cyclists. Cycling at low speeds is very safe! It's the cars that make it dangerous.
In general, (re)orienting education wholly or chiefly to specific perceived market needs is always going to produce disaster once the near term passes. It also eviscerates institutions that might otherwise help people weather change, intellectually and in other ways
We can confirm that visitors to the Palace will be able to buy "healthy cocaine" from this dealer, in our car park.

Keisari is presumably from the same root as German kaiser and various versions of tsar/czar (both from caesar) - what the exact borrowing route was I don't know!
I cannot comment on runkari 🤔 😊 but am intrigued...
As Hungary votes, would recommend this piece about how Viktor Orban has used public money to bankroll an international ultraconservative network - including Roger Scruton cafes and €10k a month for failed Reform candidate Matt Goodwin

Has anyone built a scaleable interactive bioregions and landscapes map of Europe? I would love to be able to zoom in from the scale of the Atlantic bioregion to the Atlantic Archipelago, to southeastern lowlands, to North Downs, to North Downs chalk heath or Surrey Hills, to Headley Heath, e.g.
One of the comments to this is like “of all the things to be mad about, not being able to get a credit card is low down the list” and y’all being able to leave shitty men is so important and cannot be done without money.
If you have not walked in these shoes, don’t you dare question what it takes to come forward or every individual’s choice as to when and how, if ever.
Don’t you dare.
Listen up: I am one of those rare sex assault victims who actually took the guy who did it to court. It was a local scandal that put my initials on the front page of the local paper (not my whole name because I was a minor).
You have no idea what happens to women on the stand or in the press.
I still get threats from men I wrote about a decade ago who are angry I covered federal lawsuits against them related to sexual assault allegations. To my personal email, to new work emails. I don’t think readers understand how difficult and laborious it is to get these stories published

The proposals will have a disproportionate impact on refugee women, creating cycles of instability, uncertainty and fear.
It's time for the Government to listen to those who will be impacted by these cruel proposals!

The asylum reforms are regularly making the front pages.
But behind the headlines are real people, and there will be real consequences.
So refugee women in our network have come together to share their thoughts.
