The tragedy is, if Starmer and Mahmood made the case for Guildford to remain, saying lessons learned new protocols in place to avoid a similar slip up
Then they could have made the case for Starmer to stay, lessons learned, etc
But they created a new standard forcing him out

The mistake was not to attack the police and ransack the Capitol. When will they learn?

The problem with Starmer's argument (well one of them) is that it depends on an assertion that he wouldn't have appointment Mandelson if he'd known he'd failed vetting.
But he appointed him before vetting was complete.

Mandelson had enough scandal in hot political life already to raise eyebrows.

I don’t pretend that I understand everything but sacking the already appointed ambassador and replacing her with Mandelson was a crass decision, even without this latest scandal. It was an exceptionally high risk low reward gambit and it beggars belief that it was done at all.

That said, I do think he's doing a good job, overall, except his communications are appalling. You can't undo many parliament's worth of incompetence and corruption in a year - in that I think many people are wholly unrealistic at the moment.

Starmer to admit he inadvertently gave MPs misleading information on Mandelson
PM to tell Commons he was himself misled and would ‘never knowingly mislead parliament or the public’
I do struggle with this, overall but my personal view is that if we want to hold people to the highest standards when leading the country they should resign when falling below them. Starmer probably should resign.

I still shudder in embarrassment over that. I can’t imagine how IDS feels. Not that I particularly care, given the damage he did.

Whether Starmer goes is more a matter of politics than about the constitution, but the Prime Minister should properly account to Parliament for his own decision to appoint Mandelson.
His current approach of ducking, and blaming and sacking others, is a failure of prime ministerial responsibility.

Meet James Bembridge, the Reform candidate for Westminster in next month’s local elections.
As well as this tweet, Temu Lex Luthor here, has also been quoted as saying "Most NHS nurses look like they're eating food banks out of business."
Don’t let him get his deposit back.

Roots of the current crisis:
Iran, 1953.
CIA fomented a coup against Mohammed Mossadegh, the legitimately elected President.
Mossadegh’s “crime”?
Nationalizing the foreign owned oil companies that were pumping Iranian oil.
If you know no history, everything is a mystery.

I was young in the UK when it showed there and it helped shape my world view, specifically how wrong and evil racism is. It reinforced the messages I picked up from learning about the Holocaust and the impact of prejudice on all marginalised groups of people. It resonates even more strongly today.

Honestly just ban social media until the companies can show they’ve got a grip on this.
I’m increasingly not sure democracy can survive the deepfake era.

Brexit didn't stop immigration or fix the economy.
Farage told his supporters to back Boris Johnson in the 2019 General Election, and he fully supported Liz Truss's budget himself.
So why are Reform MPs telling us that the wrong Brexit was delivered and complaining about Britain being broken?...

When Angela Rayner underpaid £40,000 in stamp duty, Richard Tice said it was "morally completely indefensible” and she should resign if she had “any moral decency”.
Now we learn he set up four shell companies that let him avoid paying £100,000 he owed in tax and to then transfer the cash to Reform
