My photo shows the c. 1,000 year old Gloucester ‘Tables’ gaming set. The game set consists of 24 obelisk-shaped bone strips with pointed ends, and bone panels which form a border, all of which were originally inlaid in a wooden base (which has not survived), and 30 disc-shaped bone gaming pieces not all shown in photo). The bone inlays are decorated with carved interlace, and ring-and-dot patterns. Each gaming piece is intricately carved and decorated with a human, or animal figure.
Is this ancient evidence of a sore loser at board games?! 😂
About 1,000 years ago, this beautifully carved 'Tables' game was smashed to pieces with an axe and thrown into a rubbish pit at Gloucester Castle!
Excavated in 1983, it's the world's oldest complete tables gaming set.
