Thanks @katenuss.bsky.social for sharing your work with us! Kate studies how people learn about the world through external exploration (acting) and internal exploration (imagining). Modeling & experiments reveal that people learn by simulating counterfactuals!

For #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience, we spoke with 3 Collective scientists, asking what made them interested in science & what their advice is for girls who are also interested in science 👩🔬

If you missed this thread, I recommend! Megan is (gasp!) studying the thing that inspired a huge fraction of us to enter the field (consciousness) - & while she's modest about it all, she's ++ earned her many accolades.
BUT! her path has not been linear. I admire her for sharing it. So inspiring.
A new approach could help AI answer complex questions faster and more accurately.
In a prize-winning paper, Yale engineer Alex Lew shows how some guiding constraints can slow AI or distort results and offers a practical way to improve both speed and quality. #Yale
New post! Last week I shared why I thought cognitive (neuro)science hasn’t contributed as much as one might hope to the design of AI systems; this week I'm sharing my thoughts on how methods and principles from these fields *have* been useful in my work. infinitefaculty.substack.com/p/how-cognit...
This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪
I've got a fully-funded PhD studentship open at @birkbeckpsychology.bsky.social, investigating social learning about metacognition & awareness, w/ behavioural studies & neuroimaging (fMRI) - thanks to @leverhulme.ac.uk

The brain computes by processing information over time through interactions between connectivity and dynamics that are hard to model. Here we infer these interactions from data and find they better predict cognitive performance! www.nature.com/articles/s41... w/ @lindenmp.bsky.social
Well this is exciting!

Congratulations Dr. Witt!!!! I hope the process was as smooth as a PhD dissertation and defense can be!
This year, as @tightlippedorg.bsky.social runs our annual fundraiser, I’m asking for donations from non-patient allies. People who don’t have chronic vulvar or vaginal pain themselves, but who agree that this situation is f***ed up, and want to help us fund systemic change.

This paper came from that conference — the only one in the world on a chronic pain condition affecting ~1 in 10 women. Now guess who sponsored the conference. Not the NIH. Not a big foundation. Patients did. Patients fund the research. Patients do the advocacy. It shouldn’t all be on us.
In March 2024, I had surgery to remove part of my vulva, where I had had pain for my entire life. Pain with tampons, pain with sex, and pain just sitting. 4 weeks post-op, I was supposed to be on bedrest, but I traveled to DC. Why? Because I don’t want other women to go through what I went through…
New paper announcement! journals.lww.com/greenjournal...
The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology is an unusual place for me to publish… Let me tell you the story of this paper.
🧠 New paper alert! Can people infer others’ values not from what they choose, but simply from what comes to mind? Across four studies, we show they can—drawing on an intuitive theory of how options are generated.

Our experience of time is powerfully shaped by boundaries between events (i.e., going from one meeting to the next). But what about time *within an event*? In new work, we find reliable distortions of time based on internal event structure (e.g., beginnings, middles, and ends)! tinyurl.com/n8mn2sn7
I'm recruiting grad students!! 🎓

Excited to share that I'm joining WashU in January as an Assistant Prof in Psych & Brain Sciences! 🧠✨!
I'm also recruiting grad students to start next September - come hang out with us! Details about our lab here: www.deckerlab.com
Reposts are very welcome! 🙌 Please help spread the word!
Psychophysics meets moral psych! In the best possible way!
I worry what this means for clinical research and patient reported outcomes, which often measure things like pain on a very simple 1-10 scale, often without clear anchoring.

The psych job market may not be dead... but it is gravely injured 😬 So far it's looking like the Trump administration's attacks on higher ed/research are going to have more than 2x the impact on the job market as the covid-19 pandemic. #psychjobs #neurojobs #academicjobs
The psych job market isn’t dead! Join us at UIC!!! We are looking for a clinical psychologist (assistant or associate level)!! Chicago is simply the best, and the department is incredibly lovely! I’m not on search committee, but as the “newest” hire, I’m happy to talk about my experience thus far!
