Iβve been so busy with my big girl adult job that I havenβt had much time for historical side quests lately (or posting on here - whoops π). But, I had to come on to hype up this exciting new adventure from the amazing @carlajeanstokes.bsky.social

Devastated to hear of Tim Cook's passing today.
Dr. Cook inspired so many young historians in our field. He was always incredibly kind, generous with his time, and the biggest cheerleader for those working in history. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Very excited to share more about Canadian war correspondents who captured the Dieppe Raid as it unfolded.
Thanks @historysymposium.bsky.social for inviting me to join your spring speaker schedule!
Now that I've finished my master's, I'm excited to return to some of the projects I've put on hold over the last few years.
The first of which will be to go back and explore the history of First World War correspondents and the Canadian Overseas Press Mission in 1919. Excited to share more soon! πββοΈ
How do we feel about long-form threads on this corner of the internet? Should I do more of these or less?
All good! I find the notification system on Bluesky is still figuring itself out
Before joining CP, Ecker was a journalist with the Vancouver Province, Calgary Herald & the British United Press. In 1943, she joined CP's small group of war correspondents in London. In 1945, she was the only woman to cover Germany's surrender & the only woman to witness the armistice signing. 2/2
Canadian war correspondent Margaret Ecker (Canadian Press) with American troops at the Mainz-Kastel Ordnance Depot and Opel's plant in Russelsheim, Germany, 1944.
Today's #WarCorrespondentWednesday is all about award-winning Canadian Press (CP) correspondent Margaret Ecker.
Ecker was the only woman war correspondent for CP during the SWW and one of a handful of Canadian women who made it to the front as a verified journalist. 1/2

Such a wonderful project out of Western's history dept.
I'm currently helping 40 students individually research some of the postcards from Dr. Vance's collection as part of their course work in 1810E: Wars that changed the world.
(And working on one of my own, to boot!)

I am so excited for this book!
It was a course taught by @rachelcleves.bsky.social on the topic of food and sex at the UVic that introduced me to the fantastic history of the FWW Doughnut Girls - which was not only the topic of my MA thesis but has also become a lifelong side project of mine πββοΈ
