The reason is more deeply embedded in the long prevailing tendencies of conservative thought and the nature of literature and the place of literature in the modern world. If we were living in 1720s England, things would look very different.

There’s just not much current literary criticism that could be said to emerge out of a conservative intellectual tradition. Why not? It’s not that conservative people have been excluded from the academy.

There are older texts of course, like Burke or Kant on aesthetics, and these might fit their bill. But of course these are very much part of syllabi on aesthetic theory today. So, not absent.

What is the conservative intellectual tradition in literary studies? Very hard to identify what would count. The only texts I can think of are things like Closing of the American Mind (ie popular polemic one could teach as such but not literary studies really) or …

They don’t want you to simply teach these texts. It doesn’t count unless you teach them as great and true

Does anyone know if the @britishlibrary.bsky.social ever plans to restore the Shakespeare in Quarto site or to make the underlying digital facsimiles accessible? The Oxford Shakeespeare Quartos Archive (which had copies) is also defunct. Are those facsimiles accessible somehow?
