This evening, @jacobin founder @sunraysunray will be delivering this year's lecture in honour of the late, great Professor Ellen Wood. I'll be in conversation with him afterward and, though tickets are sold out, the whole event will be live here. Tune in if you can!

Really interesting piece on left-wing populism and Avi Lewis from @lukewsavage.bsky.social.
It's paywalled, but he has a great sale on right now.

Canada's political soil provides particularly fertile ground for left wing populism. To a greater extent than at any other point in my adult life, the Liberals and Conservatives have ideologically converged & are mostly fighting over the aesthetics of their shared agenda.
@lukewsavage.bsky.social clear eyed insight of the state of Canada’s political landscape. This should be what msm paying for and publishing.

LILLEY: Ford caves to mob driven by petty jealousy, sells government jet
Sure, Brian. The jealous, woke mob took the premier's plane away.

In light of Louis Theroux's new manosphere doc — which is about misogyny, obviously, but also shows us the insanities of neoliberal selfhood — I've decided to unlock this one. tl;dr influencer hustle & grind bullshit is symptomatic of deep moral rot.

Over the years, I've learned to interpret what liberal elites say cryptically because they ultimately believe the real work of politics belongs to a small, savvy few. This means they're often saying different things to different audiences simultaneously.

Getting the itch to read Ulysses again after hearing @lukewsavage.bsky.social talk about it. My tip to anyone that hasn’t (which is ridiculous) but absolutely go to Dublin after and just walk around. It will give you even more a sense of awe about Joyce’s ability to create a living space in word.
Barack Obama was fond of invoking an abstract unity that was rhetorically elegant but fundamentally hollow. Mamdani is doing something quite different: engaging people through the prism of their own traditions in a moral language universalist in its implications.

“In any case, Sunstein’s defense of liberalism is about as convincing as his argument that it’s okay to be friends with war criminals because they happen to like the book you wrote about Star Wars.”

After its worst election result ever, the NDP is at a crossroads. Whoever wins the leadership race faces a tough task: rebuilding the party and proving it’s a clear alternative for Canadians. @jeyantvo.bsky.social talks with @lobbygrl.bsky.social (Wright Strategies) & @lukewsavage.bsky.social.
Last night I had the pleasure of appearing on TVO’s The Rundown to talk about the NDP leadership race. FWIW, I think one of the fault lines in the race has been about political language and whether consultant-speak has maybe gone a bit overboard.
On this point, well, opinions differ.

Oh it's just neoliberalism again
For all the talk of a US-style two party system, the essence of Mark Carney's political project has more in common with Emmanuel Macron's: a right-leaning, technocratic brand of nationalism built around a powerful executive at its centre.

“Hierarchical societies do not have a shared culture so much as a prescribed one, their values & symbols flowing from top to bottom & from rulers to ruled.
Britain today remains a deeply hierarchical country.”

Britain’s 2017 general election result repudiated decades of elite consensus wisdom about political strategy and the savvy genius of centrist triangulation. Which is why many pundits and operatives would rather act like 2017 never took place.

Never in the whole of human history has so much technology and capital been invested in mass entertainment. Never in the whole of human history has mass entertainment been so insipidly bad.
