this is why i wait until Teams says "there are 4 other people in the meeting" to join voice calls :D

but i also just straight up avoid fandom voice chats/groups. i don't like the casual chatting with strangers sort of a thing.

John Freeman got on his motorcycl and said "its time for me to live up to my family name and face full life consequences" so he had to go.

i like how a 15 picosecond glance at this nostalgic screen immediately gets the stage 1 music stuck in my head, thanks for that :D

My NAS is a combo of WD white-label Red drive salvaged from the usual Best Buy externals, and used 12TB Seagates I bought cheap and subjected to a battery of tests for a backup array. It's nice to mix drive brands so you don't get one bad batch. It's overkill but I like having all my old projects.

Honestly, I'd just keep backups if you can afford it. Run h2testw if you're patient or a long SMART test at the start, monitor the health values, and try to get it to break early. Failures are a bathtub curve usually. Drives are getting stupid expensive though like everything else now :(

Are you writing pngs or exrs for your animations? One danger zone would be if you had a nearly-full drive and kept re-writing temp files like that in the remaining ~5% of space, hammering it over and over.

Right before I quit 3d art (day job...:( ) I was using a mirrored NAS for more reliability.

It might just be random luck. For ages I was using a WD Green drive with 3.5 million dock/undock cycles that survived a 19V power surge (fried the external controller board, the hard drive was fine, I reformatted it and used it). I've definitely had drives die but it's always been random.

I have one SSD that is acting kind of weird and slow (yes it's backed up) but in general the last major failures I've had have been: an external hard drive that a family member banged around, the infamous 2-3TB Seagates, and some 2TB drives I bought used from a friend and he shipped them terribly.

Using Blender Just Got A Lot More Expensive - Massive Changes To Superhive Market
Using Blender Just Got A Lot More Expensive - Massive Changes To Superhive Market YouTube video by Artisans of Vaul

Superhive, the main marketplace for Blender addons has a new policy

Purchased addons will no longer have lifetime updates - you get a max of a year from purchase before you have to repurchase.

Blender breaks its interface all the time - for fixes you will have to rebuy all your addons every year

I started getting more into interactions with characters to spice things up. It's not just bondage anymore, now it's bondage but ALSO there's another character helping/tormenting/teasing/playing/suffering with you, with all the interesting dynamics that might entail!

So far I'm charmed, it's giving me big Firewatch vibes (not just the art style but also the sound design) as well as reminding me of when I thought I'd be going into gamedev and I was working with some low-poly aesthetic like this for awhile before I became corporate and boring..

Downloading it, no spoilers! Probably won't stream it though, I'm not that kind of gamer and don't have that much free time. :(

Been wanting to play it awhile...

I'm just saying if my house doubled as a blast furnace I too would find it slightly hard to focus on drawing as opposed to like, focusing my efforts on not melting D: I hope the weather breaks for you soon!

Jesus, you're making me feel so old. My FA was registered in 2007 exactly. My account will be able to drink in a few years D:

It's all relative. To my eyes, as someone who put down a pencil in childhood and now doesn't have time to develop a skill from scratch in busy adulthood (I would rather focus on refining what I'm already good at), you are a professional and capable artist...

Just watch out as some of the earlier CD-Rs at least have foil backing that is starting to flake these days. Nothing is eternal. Test every few years even on DVDs!

truly an incredible business decision: make a game aimed at possibly *the* most anti-genAI crowd, and then use genAI in it. amazing. bold strategy cotton, as the kids say. an absolute 5head, twelve dimensional chess strategy.

@wildassault.com Yeah no you don't get to just delete that and sweep under the rug.

Might be worth a shot! You can always add it to your own character roster if it doesn't work out.

Personally I almost always do custom comms these days although I occasionally will go for YCHes for specific interests that line up with mine. Adoptables have never crossed my mind lol.

ALL devices will eventually fail. Over time it's likely you'll eventually accumulate "bit rot" either from errors slipping past the drive's self-correction mechanisms, memory/CPU/bus errors, cosmic rays, etc. The best defense is a layered defense. Keep multiple copies. Keep hashes. Test often.

2 months ago 2 0 1 0

Spot checking files? Better than nothing and will detect catastrophic drive failures at least.

Fancier checks would be generate and store file hashes to verify they are bit-correct, using something like sha256.

Even better, use par2 or similar to store hashes that can repair limited data.

2 months ago 2 0 1 0

The best defense is a numbers game. If all you have is flash drives, by all means, use flash drives, but keep your data on multiple of them, and *check them occasionally*. What that looks like is up to your risk tolerance and budget.

2 months ago 0 0 1 0

To add onto this:

All devices will lose data over long periods of time when not powered on.

Hard drives are relatively robust against this. SSDs, especially more modern ones, are more fragile. Flash drives and SD cards are the worst and WILL randomly die when you need them the most. 🧵
