We don't usually record talks, to facilitate more open Q&A time. But I'll see if we can record the talk portion and make it available.
I look forward to my visit in Buffalo. Thank you @ryanmuldoon.bsky.social for the invite. I am using a brilliant paper by @aoprea.bsky.social as my jumping-off point.

Bucking the national trend, we will have as many as *7* incoming PhD students this year.
Consider applying. PhD applications are due Jan 2, MA applications due Jan 5. While you are doing one of those, you can also earn an Advanced Certificate in PPE.

We have an outstanding faculty, tons of research opportunities, lots of visitors, an army of postdocs, millions in grant funding to support innovative research, and a great, supportive group of grads.
This also shows up in Schumpeter’s discussion of elite overproduction. Highly trained people whose expectations are frustrated work to undermine the institutions they lost under. I think this generalizes to Hobbes’ view that when things are going well people think “I could do better”
The Second Annual PPE at the Frontier event was fantastic. Thanks to our incredible guests for an extremely stimulating two days, and some possible new collaborations! Looking forward to next year!
No, I had never heard of it! Sounds interesting though. I would love to see more reasoning from complexity in liberal theory. And more democratic philosophy that doesn’t just announce what the majority will choose.
Gaus’ Tyranny of the Ideal and The Open Society and its Complexities.
I also like my Social Contract for a Diverse World
The liberal acknowledges and lives comfortably among many incommensurable status games. The authoritarian is intent on reducing them all down to one.
Are you a democratic theorist? Interested in Immigration? Want a 2 year postdoc? Come join the UB PPE group! Work with our large and growing team on our Mellon Foundation-Funded grant “Inclusive Immigration and Democratic Revival in a Rust Belt City.” Live the dream in Buffalo.
Grad students! Apply for our *free* weeklong workshop on PPE methods. Join our ever-growing network of scholars engaged in rigorous interdisciplinary study of difficult social problems.
June 2-7. Applications due Jan 24.
UB's PPE group has gotten our third big grant this academic year! With Alex Oprea as PI, we'll be looking at inclusive immigration and local democratic innovation.

On Liberty. Really nicely written for a broad audience, has a lot of great ideas, and is obviously relevant.
We have an incredibly vibrant and supportive academic community. Tons of opportunities for ambitious students. And Buffalo is a great city with tons of amenities, all of which a grad student can afford. UB PPE is very tough to beat!

Not sure about the academic job market, and want to have some industry options as well? UB has a *100%* placement rate into high-paying industry jobs for those who want them.
Want a lot of opportunities for talking philosophy and developing your projects? We have more talks and workshops than you can shake a stick at. We have reading groups galore. And we have the resources to support graduate students who present at conferences.
Concerned about professionalization, both in terms of learning the process of publishing academic articles and giving presentations? We have weekly sessions about this with our graduate students, with ample opportunities to refine these skills.
Our undergraduate and graduate students all have many opportunities for impactful projects in the community. Not sure how to start? This can all be supported by the PPE group's full-time Community Engagement Coordinator.
