🚨 Master’s project!
Curious how birds find their way? 🧭🐦
Analyze decades of ringing data to study abnormal migratory routes and uncover what these deviations can reveal about the mechanisms guiding birds on their journeys. Drop me an email for details! #ornithology

Round trip complete! Spoonbill PRUNUS reached the Wadden Sea yday evening, and after mingling with the Spoonbills on Texel for the night, she arrived back at her Vlieland home this morning - 41 days since she left on her epic adventure! #ornithology

Even in summer, Doñana's flooded marshes sustain countless migrant birds from NW Europe.
Godwits en route to West Africa, and teenage Spoonbills 'oversummering' in Iberia made do with fish ponds & rice fields last few yrs. Now, they much prefer the marsh! #ornithology

What a beautiful map of our data! I just found this, very nice!
Cool study!
Tracks of 24 juvenile Spoonbills tagged in June 2025 in the Dutch Wadden Sea.
Tracks of adult Spoonbills in the Wadden Sea, including 14 individuals tagged in the 2025 breeding season.
Thanks to meticulous data management by @arnevaneerden.bsky.social, the 2025 Spoonbill cohort is now visible on globalflywaynetwork.org/tracks/speci...
Among them 24 juveniles (left) from 6 Wadden Sea islands. Follow along & discover how they establish routines in coming months! #ornithology

We are hiring a new PhD candidate 🎉as part of the No-REGRETS (NOrth Sea Renewable Energy: Gaining the Required Ecological Knowledge for the TranSition) consortium. If you are excited too, have what we are looking for and interested in joining us please apply. #ornithology #animalmovement
Lekker gewerkt Eppo!

This seems like an appropriate time to remind decision makers of the comprehensive Ardea special on Great Cormorants which offers a clear evidence-baded response to calls for managing Cormorant by culling. #ornithology

POSTDOC VACANCY: We have a 3 year position available studying variation in population size and habitat use of red knots in the #WaddenSea. We the aim to understand bottom-up and top-down processies. More info here: workingat.nioz.nl/o/postdoc-po... #WATLAS #SIBES #ornithology #movementecology
Last week, 56,000 #btgodwits were counted in the rice fields of the #Tagus estuary, the highest concentration of the species in the EAF. In this rice field alone, 36K godwits were recorded by drone!

Read the paper in @amornith.bsky.social or the blog: americanornithology.org/balancing-ne... if you want to know if they have favourite tree species, avoid lesser noddy colonies, and have a specific height preferences (and more!).
We also found that females placed their nests near the territory border if their male neighbor is older than their partner. Could nest placement facilitate extra-pair matings?
A key finding was that pairs with helpers can take more risks. Pairs with helpers nested in food-rich areas, even with higher predator density. In contrast, pairs with helpers choose sites away from nest predators.
🐦🪺 How do birds select their nest-site? Simple question, but hard to answer. Our latest (my first authored 🎉) paper investigates how food availability, predator density, and helpers influence nest-site selection and nest survival in the Seychelles warbler.

When, where, and why so Spoonbills die? Thanks to volunteers all along the flyway the Dutch spoonbill research team @birdeyes-gfn.bsky.social is able to verify many cases.
Researcher Tamar Lok summarised the deaths from the 2024 autumn season in a brief report:

Wonderful! Could you add me as well?
