Terrific paper from our colleagues @hazcenter.bsky.social develops ideas of disaster literacy based on experience, yet is critical of overstating youth agency in the face of sociomaterial inequalities: should inform disaster planners everywhere @cabinet-office-uk.bsky.social @lucygobag.bsky.social

People standing outside parliament with road sign placards with messages like 'stop child poverty going up', 'look out for children'.
We were in parliament today with @endchildpoverty.bsky.social @oxfamgb.bsky.social @unicef-uk.bsky.social @actionforchildren.bsky.social @thekidsnetwork.bsky.social to highlight a new record high level of child poverty & that 44% of kids in poverty are living in a household where someone is disabled
Yes. Also convenient to blame smartphones for children’s loss of outdoor play, physical activity and social contact. We started @playingout.bsky.social as parents 17 years ago because these things were already being lost due to an increasingly child-hostile *outdoor* environment.

This was a great episode - congrats to former CUiDAR advisor Lucy Easthope!
So looking forward to this!
Weighing and balancing risks, holding multiplicity, having the stomach for uncertainty -- this is the main thing I have learned from Lucy and the after disaster world and what life skills they are!

Firefighters are still tackling recent wildfires in LA. This catastrophic event must act as a wakeup call. Since 2010, one in five firefighter jobs have been axed, leaving us underprepared for climate disasters. We only need to look at major UK wildfires since 2011 to see why we need more funding.
NUJ welcomes Gaza ceasefire deal.
The union has called for clear guarantees for press freedom and urged both sides to play their important role in allowing for the safety and protection of all citizens, including brave journalists on frontlines.

"[Women] keep their beauty regime going, so they pay me to trim their hair and do a manicure," says Maha, who runs a boutique in a camp for displaced people in #Gaza.

‘Tiny broken bodies, rotting babies, flattened corpses, mass graves, levelled neighbourhoods.
It is a spectacle of slaughter. All unfolding in plain sight, livestreamed and posted by Palestinian citizens and journalists, witnessed by outsiders, and described by Israelis themselves.’
Where is the condemnation? At least we have Nesrine.

So important to mark this anniversary. Our work with the children of South Ferriby, their testimonies and their demands for change left a lasting impression on us. Thanks Chris!

From #Gaza and #Sudan to #Ukraine, #DRC, #Haiti and many more, children are paying an immensely high price for conflict.
They are severely affected by violence, destruction of schools and infrastructure, and compromised health services.
They need safety, services and peace.
